OT: My brass is shrinking

Post by J Miller »

I'm trying to put together a batch of .45 Colt ammo to practice with. Got the load all decided and now I'm prepping the brass.

363 cases in this lot. Last time I loaded them they were once fired. I evened them out by trimming them to a max of 1.275", and that's .005" short of the 'trim to' length. Now after sizing them only a few even come close to this measurement. Most of them are around 1.270" and some are shorter. I'd like to know where that brass goes.

The manufacturers are making the darn stuff shorter and uneven as it is, and now my stuff is shrinking????? I think there's a conspiracy here. :o

Now to get a couple hundred cases that are the same length I'll either have to buy some new stuff, or find a case stretcher.

Anybody got a couple hundred once fired .45 Colt cases that make 1.280" they'd sell?? Just kidding, I'll bet all you guys hoard this stuff just like I do :P .

Hmmmm, I wonder if I feed some .44 Mag cases a dose of vigaro growth food if they'd fit?

Joe,

In case you haven't noticed everything shrinks as you get older. You hairline, your shirt, your jackets, your pants, your belt, and what's under it.

Cheer up, we'll all be dead soon.

I read an article by Ross Seyfried a number of years ago, and he mentioned that straight-wall cases shrink as they get re-sized. I haven't trimmed a straight-wall case since then. I have in the past stretched some 9mm and .45 ACP cases. I suppose it will work with .45 LC cases, but you run the .45 case into a .30-'06 or .308 or 8mm Mauser die--not all the way, but "enough". You have to experiment to find out how much is enough. Then, you expand the case mouth and measure the length. If it's long enough, seat your bullet and go. The loaded cartridge will be a tad wasp-waisted, but it will work.

As long as you can still hear them clank from time to time you're all right.

Trim after sizing. I've got a batch of 30-06 brass I leaned that on.

Rusty, that's really ...... ah.... well encouraging

You know a lot of this is the factories fault. They don't make them consistent from the start. If they would just shrink equally that wouldn't be so bad.
They'd start off as .45 Colts, then shrink to .45 Schofields, then shrink to A-jacks .45 Cowboy Spcl, then finally to the scrap bucket.
But they don't.

What a pain in my posterior.

Anybody got any .454 brass that's shrunk to near .45 Colt length :?: :?: :?:
