One more question tonight.
Has any one used one of the big hoop levers in cas shooting, and is it worth the change. I have never even picked one up yet.

Re: john waye lever
it is not suggested to use a big loop in cas....
The ideal gun you want to use is a uberti, cimarron
or taylors and company 1873.....
with a short throw kit....a short throw kit will
reduce the travel of the lever around 3" or so
which creates speed....
most of the guys i have watched use 66's or 73's
but I have also seen marlins, and 92s....
But if you just out there to have fun....I guess
any lever will do...... in pistol caliber...
Go over to sassnet.com and do a search...
or just ask the question...they will be happy to help!

Re: john waye lever
Those big ring levers look cool, but I don't like them on a using rifle.
In my very limited experience they slow repeat shots significantly.
Think about it, with that big lever, your hand has to move a couple of inches, or more, before you even start moving the lever to open the action. At the end of the opening stroke you hand has to move the same distance before you even start the closing stroke. I expect that in a 10 shot string that would add a couple of second to your score. Can you afford that much additional time?
Now if I lived in country where I'd be hunting in sub-zero weather, I'd go with one of Wild West's levers that are slightly enlarged to permit use of heavy gloves or mittens.
Now if I could afford a Model 92 Winchester with a 12" barrel that I could spin cock without hitting myself in the head with the front sight, I MIGHT consider one of those John Wayne levers. But that is the only way I'd buy one.
IMO, rimfire gave you some good advise.

They look cool but have no practical value. They don't even scabbard as well as a standard lever. As to spin cocking, none of the current crop have the action modified to enable spin cocking. You need a retracting pin installed in the top of the breech or when you spn the cartridge drops out on your foot. Yhe other baddie in spin cocking is that at some point you are pointing a loaded gun at your own armpit. "Well Doc it was liike this"...
Re: john waye lever
Going to a slightly larger loop is good if you wear gloves while hunting. But the grossly oversized John Wayne / Chuck Connors style is pure Hollywood. You can shoulder and lever a levergun much faster than you can spin cock one. And as far as shooting from the hip, again, pure Hollywood.
