We need more sizes of sabots.
Anyone know of a .430" sabot for .357" bullets? If so, you could roll your own "357 Bain & Davis" and get .357 Maximum performance from a .44 Mag levergun.
Sabots of other than "blackpowder" sizes or 'rifle' .45 sizes would also help with bullet/bore incompatabilities if/when materials were difficult to obtain for whatever reason.
I can't understand why this niche remains unfilled; moulds aren't that expensive to make and the 'technology' is already there for other sizes.

AJMD429,
When I get settled in N.M., where my lathe resides; I plan to experiment with lathe turning " out " the .30 /.22 sabots to .257 dia.
I am just not sure about how to turn plastic, have to learn as I go.

A .430 sabot would be great and I'd like to see sabots in .431/.432 too.

I want to try sabots in .357 and .308 with 22 cal bullets, to use the big gun for small game.

I imagine that they don't exist because there's just not much of a market for them. A very small % of gun owners/shooters are handloaders. The folks that do handload and would use something like that would have to be a very small % of handloaders.
It would be fun to play with some various combinations though.

They DO actually sell .308/.223 sabots - try eabco.com, or if you can't find any post back and I'll see where I wrote down the source.El Chivo wrote:I want to try sabots in .357 and .308 with 22 cal bullets, to use the big gun for small game.
Still wish they sold them in the OTHER calibers, though....

I doubt sabots would take well to forcing cones and that's probably the reason they aren't made for those conversions. I think they would work ok in rifles but I suspect someone would break a nice revolver with them and sue. I'll just bet any would be sabot maker has thought of the same thing.

Yep. We KNOW that for sure! The .30-06 "accelerator" rounds do about 4,000 fps with a .223 bullet from the .30-06, and my Savage Muzzleloader spits out a 250 grain .45 bullet at around 2500 fps using smokeless powder, so here's hoping the sabot makers make us some more diameters to mess with...Buffboy wrote:I think they would work ok in rifles . . .

are sabots accurate?
I don't want to get another rifle just for coyote, I would rather use my 30-30.

I found the link. 30-30 only but that will do it!

Re: We need more sizes of sabots.
I think you can just buy a box of "accellerator" factory loads for .30-30 (for sure .30-06) if I'm not mistaken - they should give you an idea what you can achieve. Out of my muzzleloader .45 bullets in a .50 bore) they'll cloverleaf 5 shot groups at 75 yards; probably 100 if I was a better shot.El Chivo wrote:are sabots accurate?

I would have to make my own using Barnes bullets. It's a neat idea.

Re: We need more sizes of sabots.
You can make your own Sabots any size.
Been doing it for years.
It's called Paper Patching.
There was an article in Gun & Ammo a few years back describing how.
The bigger the difference between the bore size and the bullet you want to use the
more difficult it becomes.
