Ruger 96/44 worth $600?

It's in great shape, only one slight dent. Doesn't look fired. No scope or rings, three mags.

I'm thinking $600 is a stretch, even though they are discontinued and sorta sought after.

And I already have one, but I'd like another.

Talk me in/out of it.

I just sold one in like new shape with mounted scope and two extra mags right here on this forum for a wee bit under $450.The price you mentioned is way too high.You can do better than that on Gunbroker.JMHO.

Depends on location. They are VERY popular here in IN... I think it would sell for $600 here fairly quickly.

The price seems high, I would think $400-450. but it is definitely a regional thing.

I just bought one from a gun store over in Redding, CA for $425.00. It came with the rings and with a Bushnell scope mounted on it -- no extra mags though.

Yep, for my area, $600.00 is high but as "Old Ironsights" said, geographic location will have an influence on price.

As with anything, it's what's it worth to you. Heck, I've made deals/trades knowing that I was letting something go for far less than what it was worth but knowing I was getting something for it that I really really wanted that was few and far between.

It'd be different if I didn't already have a 96/44 and my "Gotta have it" circuits were kicked in full power.

IMO $600 was about $150 too much, especially for these parts. But of late, everybody with a gun to sell is grabbing for all the gusto they can.

That price is to high for me !

I asked a dealer about one they had here in central Virginia back when they were still being made and he was gonna let me have the thing NEW for a few dollars under $400 .

Stan in SC and OI both have the scoop. I live in IN, and thought the price (I bought Stan's) was very reasonable (and BTW, the gun was in EXCELLENT condition). It is now my main 'deer' gun (will see in next two weeks if I can do my part), partly because I can quickly unload it when I cross the road (which crosses my hunting area) or come in the house. I haven't truly accuracy tested it, but it makes a five shot group easily under 3 inches at 100 yards with peeps on it and my lousy technique.

If I didn't have one, I'd want one.

Now, maybe if you could re-barrel one in .357 Bain & Davis, THAT would be like having a .357 Maximum in a levergun. I don't know if the action is 'rated' for that (most of the .357 H&R's are NOT).

I had one and it was truly a piece of stuff. I have owned 3 different Ruger lever actions and got rid of all three of them real fast. I would not pay $600 for 4 of them. Just my opinion, but it comes from experience. Tom.

You ought to take a road trip - they trade for about $350-$400 here in New England.

I sold the one I had, several years ago, for $350 - because I couldn't find a quality walnut replacement stock and really didn't care for the peanut-butter "hardwood" issue wood.
Mechanically, mine was fine, though - very reminicient of a Savage 99, with the case-hardened lever.

Well, I already have one 96/44 and it's very accurate and slick-handling. Thanks to everyone's input I agree that $600 is too much, period.
