range report: Fantastic Day !!!

Post by new pig hunter »

Last week I installed & boresighted a Burris Fullfield II 2-7x35 on my brand-new 19-year-old never-been-fired Marlin 444S.
Last week the ammo from Wisconsin Cartridge arrived.

Today was The Big Day: first firing and scope sight-in.
Put the target at 50 yards, first five shots grouped quite nicely: 2" right & 2" low. WOW !!!!!
Fiddled with the scope knobs and got the group close to the bullseye.
Moved the target out to 100 yards and was keeping shots on a 5" diameter Shoot-N-See. YAHOO !!!!
Turned the crosshairs on some pumpkins and the chunks were flying !! If you've not shot a pumpkin with a high-powered rifle, I recommend you do that, great fun.
Turned the crosshairs on a bowling pin: moved it all around the field !!! AWESOME !!!
And a very nice aspect: the shoulder pounding wasn't very bad at all. I use a Beartooth Recoil Pad and didn't find the perceived recoil to be any worse than .30-06.

OK, Round 2: my Howa 1500 bolt-action .30-06 pig hunting rifle. Last week my gunsmith pal smith'ed it a bit: ground away some synthetic stock to free-float the barrel, bedded the action, and smoothed up the trigger.
I had to readjust the scope as the improvements made it shoot low, and it is now a much smoother-shooting rifle !!

OK, Round 3: the Remington 700 ADL, .22-250. It has been a wonderfully accurate rifle from day 1, and today was no different. Flat-shooting accuracy from 100 to 200 yards, moving bowling pins around and sending pumpkin chunks skyward.

Perfect SoCal weather for a morning at the range: bright, sunny, 75 degrees, clean fresh air .....

Cheers,

Carl

Try telling him if he quits puking, you'll buy him a new Marlin 39A - I think with my kid, it would likely have worked no matter how sick he really was...
