As you know, I picked up a blunderbuss a couple months back. I need to do some research on the web for loads, but thought I'd also ask here. Does anyone else own a blunderbuss? What kind of projectiles do you shoot in it (size and loading of shot)? What charge do you use?
I don't happen to own one yet!! But I have fired them.
Depending on the bore at the breech, if it's about 10 gauge I would start off with 80grains of FFg and about 11/2 oz of shot or small buck shot. Wadding, that I have used is tissue paper wadded down tight over the powder and as much paper over the shot as will keep the load together. Proper wads if you can find them or cut them are better.
Great fun and awesome to watch. YK Jr will definitely be impressed.

A blunderbuss is basically a short shotgun. Use the chamber diameter instead of the breach and load accordingly. Since they tend to be a little light for calibre, you could beat yourself up (and it) pretty easily.
(Notice how I went Old World with spelling? Seemed like the thing to do when discussing blunderbusses!)
YK What loads did your research give you?...Could be a thumper... I remember reading somewhere that the short stocked ones were meant to be placed on the hip and fired ...as I recall, yours looked to be a shoulder fired one. Should be a hoot for sure.

YK...over on americanlongrifles.org there are a great number of builders, shooters and even barrel makers. You might ask there. You'll probably get a few persnickety answers from folks who don't like brass barrels, but you can glean alot of info even from those responses. Give us a range report when you can! That is going to be fun. Arrrrggggghh.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
The traditional load for a Blunderbus was as much powder as would fit onto the palm of one open hand (comes out to about 80-100gr), followed by a wad of wasp's nest, pack, a cupped handfull of shot and another wad of wasp's nest packed down good & tight on top.
Think about how a blunderbus was supposed to be used... on a rolling ship/carriage.
Load wile moving. What can you get down that big hole fastest before touching it off again...

Some years ago the NRA directed an experiment on the spread of buckshot from several differently designed Blunderbusses. The Blunderbusses differed in breech caliber, barrel length and degree and length of muzzle flare, yet they all delivered similar patterns.
At forty feet the spread was 20 to 36 inches. At sixty feet the spreads ran from 40 to 50 inches. Beyond sixty feet the shot dispersed so widely that comparisons were impossible to compare.
Interestingly the gun producing the widest spread had the greatest breech caliber and the smallest muzzle diameter of the lot.
