1951 336 A question

Post by dr walker »

Quick question for you Marlin guys.
Was the Marlin 336A built in 1951 factory drilled and tapped?

I was looking at a Marlin 336A today serial # makes it as 1951. The rifle had a modern Weaver base mounted to the top of the reciever. I asked if I could remove it to see the top of the reciever , so I could see if the D&T was butchered or a clean job. The seller told me that all Marlins are D&T at the factory, he huffed about my request to pull the base off, so I told him to forget about it and walked away.

So, now that I am home I am wishing i just had him pull the base after all.
Here's the thing this rifle is in excellent condition and was priced fair. I dont care if it was D&T by someone if it is a good clean job.
I thought Marlin did not drill and tap the tops until the mid-fifties.

Were the Marlin 336's from 1951 drilled and tapped on the top of the reciever for a scope base?

I believe the year they started on the 336's was 1955 !

I have several 336SC's that aren't D&T ! But they were all made 1952 or earlier !

Thanks for the replies, I found out why he didnt want to take the base off. There were two sets of holes in the top. The first set of holes were off center and horrible looking, the second set were ok. I offered him half of his asking price and I was promptly told no. I am not up for welding the top and repairing it properly. It is too bad because it was a very nice example. Thanks again for the replies.

Nope, they started I think in late 55 but some say 56, 1951n is unquestionably pre D&T.
