OT... SHOT TRAVEL
Does anyone know how far shot travels, I sqirrel hunt with a .410, #4 shot.
Just wondering how far ,say a 45 degree angle would travel, not be effective, just travel.

Re: OT... SHOT TRAVEL
I remember dove hunting in the past where I would occasionally get "showered" from other hunters that were probably 300 yards away. I learned quickly to keep the bill of my hat down.

Re: OT... SHOT TRAVEL
300 yds max sounds about right for your load. A .410 bore with a 2 3/4" shell generally launches its payload at about 1200 fps; and the diminutive, round #4 birdshot is only 3.30mm (.130") in diameter; so it won't retain its speed for very long; and it certainly has a poor ballistic coefficient.
Maybe an engineer/shooter can work up the stats from this information! ...or, maybe somebody can shoot a load at a 35 degree angle over a lake and see where it lands!

Re: OT... SHOT TRAVEL
I haven`t tried it with #4 but most of the shot 7 1/2 & 8`s fall between 90 and 120yd (from the shooter) at our trap range. I doubt if the #4`s get beyond 200yd.

Re: OT... SHOT TRAVEL
I've got a chart that says with the muzzle elevated 30 degrees, #4 birdshot will travel just under 300 yards. #9 will be about 150 yards, #6 250 yards.4t5 wrote:Does anyone know how far shot travels, I sqirrel hunt with a .410, #4 shot.

2200 X Shot Diameter (in inches) gives rough estimate of max travel of shot. Journee's formula.
Re: OT... SHOT TRAVEL
Sounds like we all might start watching where we are shooting, even with a shotgun. I sure wouldn't want to hit someone by accident. On the other hand, if I am aiming at then, then I do want to hit them. Hope the second part is never necessary.

Re: OT... SHOT TRAVEL
OK,
#4 birdshot = .130 inch;
and .130 X 2200 = 286 (yards) maximum.
But how can we arrive at the true distance, not necessarily the absolute max, using the muzzle (initial) velocity as a factor?

Re: OT... SHOT TRAVEL
Yes, but birshot is so small and light, and dumps what little energy it has so fast, I wouldn't be too worried about being hit with it beyond 100 yards.piller wrote:Sounds like we all might start watching where we are shooting, even with a shotgun.

Nath, I like #4's better than #6's ,4's penetrate better for me ,6's stop just under the skin to many times.
I carry a single six for upclose ground shots, and a bolt action 410 thats been in the family for decades for tree work.

Re: OT... SHOT TRAVEL
With being on many driven bird shoots in England here as in beating and shooting it is very common to have bird shot raining down on us all the time but at most it only stings on bare skin. You hear it more than feel it on clothing.
I have heard our AAA shot raining down around me before and errr that sounds scary!

Re: OT... SHOT TRAVEL
It's not so much about how far it travels, but at what distance it still stings or even worse, embeds in your hide! Once it's over 100 yds. it wont do a whole lot of damage, and over 150 yds. it's not much more than the effects of a hail storm.
