Anybody checked it out? My copy came in the mail today and after reading Barsness on the last page and Scovill on the first ( my usual routine) a Doug Turnbull Ad caught my attention. 475Turnbull looks pretty darn potent, right on the heels of the 458Win Mag.

Sure would be nice in one of his 1886 restorations.

They must deliver to Alberta first. I just got my issue yesterday. Lots of good stuff this time around. 475 Turnbull would be an interesting cartidge me thinks. Maybe they will do an article on it.

LAJ's referring to the latest issue of Rifle Magazine. IIRC, that .475 Turnbull Model 1886 goes for somewhere in the neighborhood of $24,000.00 - Merry Christmas !

Haven't read the referenced mag yet, but have a question -
To wit - a hot .45-70 or .45-90 is also "right on the heels" of the .458 Win mag, so why do we need another such "almost" big boomer?

yes, we Do like to get paid!

I haven't seen the magazine yet. I usually don't get to engrave the fancy guns...

It wasn't designed to replace the 45's, but to get better down range performance than the 50's.

Seems to be very versatile, and the guns don't HAVE to cost 24,000 !

Less fancy guns cost less. In some cases, an existing gun could just be rebarreled.

I don't know much, I'm just the in house engraver, way at the back of the building.

I sure do like the looks of the $24000 Gun

I like to see new cartridges being developed for levers, wether big boomers or lil poppers, I'm just tired of reading about short this, super short that or shoot your deer in Colorado without leaving your hot tub in Wyoming cartridges.

I don't think I did the one in the magazine though. I haven't engraved any of the 475's yet. Too busy doing the mundane stuff!

Here are a couple I did over the last few years at Turnbull Restoration.

1873 for the NRA

1906 for a custom order

Inlay on 1886 rear sight

I apologize if you have seen these already.

Hopefully, we can work something out someday!

I almost took a job in Vancouver 4 years ago, but when we found out my wife was pregnant, we turned it down.

Anyway, it would be nice to get some of my work up to Canada!
Actually, we do get some work at Turnbull's from Canada from time to time.

I'd love to hear more about the 475 Turnbull! What are the advantages of this over the other 1886 Winchester cartridges if handloading in a modern Winchester?

That's nice to hear a friend told me that we couldn't ship guns down to the US for gunsmithing work, hopefully one day I will. I like the photo's thanks for sharing.

check out turnbullrestorations.com for the story of the development. and yes this is an affordable conversion for anyone with an 1886. by using the big 50 case you can get the needed powder capacity that is unavailable in the 45-70 case with big bullets.
