Hey, if anyone is going to be in the Sacramento area come November 15th, we're holding our Military Silhouette Match at the Sac Valley Shooting Center. It's not a sanctioned match and is very informal. It's all about the FUN and NOTHING else.
The rules are as follows:
1) Must use an as-issue military surplus rifle....sorry no ARs or M1As. Swedes, K31s, 03's, Garands, & Mosin Nagants are the most popular. The Swedes and K31s tend to win.
2) No FMJ or AP. Most use SP or handloads with HPBT bullets. AP and FMJ damage the targets and they cost a lot to fix and replace.
3) Original iron sights if you wish to compete for the prizes ($$). Scoped or original sniper rifles are placed in the Open Class and compete against each other.
4) We shoot from the prone position. No bipods. You can use a sling or bag rest over an ammo can...that sort of thing.
5) We shoot 4 strings of fire...10 rounds each. 10 minutes per string. Unlimited sighters.
6) You shoot in pairs. One pulling the trigger and another calling the shots for you. He or she will also mark the shots on a target board for you and coach you if you want.
7) The targets are plate steel silhouettes. 200 meter chickens, 300 meter pigs, 385 meter turkeys, and 500 meter rams. All are sized to appear the same in your sight picture.
8) We shoot rain, shine, fog, whatever. However, the shooting stands are covered. It will be windy though. Dress warmly.
9) Bring snacks, drinks, whatever you want. No booze.
10) Sign-in starts at 8am. Shooting starts at 9am and finishes around noon. $15 entry fee and you're in.
11) Bring at least 60 rounds. 40 for record, plus more for sighters and for any shoot-offs in case of a tie. I tied for second place one time and didn't have enough rounds for the shoot-off. Therefore, I was third. Now I bring at least 80 rounds to every match.
11) You will have fun. Guaranteed!! If you don't, that's your fault. Not ours!
12) Kids and significant others are most welcome. Never turn down a chance to introduce a new shooter to our sport.
13) If you don't have a partner to call the shots for you, you'll be teamed up with another single. Don't worry, you'll be covered.
Personally, I'm heading to the range tomorrow to check on some hand loads for my 1902 Carl Gustav Swedish Mauser and my 1943 Swiss K31. I'll post some picture of the girls and range results tomorrow afternoon. In addition to the above mentioned rifles, I've seen guys shooting Krags, Argie & Yugo Mausers, an SKS, Enfields, and even a Trapdoor using blackpowder loads. That guy didn't hit very many targets, but he was certainly the center of attention and made a LOT of new friends!! Heck, I suppose if someone brought a Henry or Spencer, you'd certainly qualify as military-issue...and lever-action to boot! If you're a new shooter, no sweat. You'll be placed into your own category and will compete against other newbies. You won't be shooting against Masters, but might get teamed with one and learn a whole lot.
One final note....the overall match winner for the last few months has been a guy shooting a 100 year old Swedish Mauser with stock open sights. He usually shoots 35 or 36 out of 40 and knocks down more targets than the guys with the scoped rifles. It's something impressive, let me tell you.
Hope to see some of you there!

Not Leverguns, but guns nevertheless..
Some people just need a sympathetic pat on the head.....with a hammer. Repeatedly.
Re: Not Leverguns, but guns nevertheless..
We've been shooting "Military Cast Bullet" Silhouette matches for about 10 years now. We follow the same rules as Big Bore Levergun. ANY military rifle, with lead bullets (nothing with a jacket) and iron sights, can be used.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
