Re: *OT* Ad In Paper Today
My friend Mike tried the 10 ga. in both the Ithaca semi-auto and the H&R single-shot. AFter having tried everything from handguns to rifles and nearly every type of shotgun he eventually went back to the good old 12 ga. 3"... I didn't get a chance to shoot either. He couldn't afford to let me shoot a round!
However, I believe there is a reason it was only shot once.
Sincerely,
Hobie

My Brother's FiL has a 30" + Win 1910 10ga...

Probably the only 10ga I would be interested in owning.

How much harder does a 10 smack you, than a 12? Always wondered about that.

My turkey gun is an NEF single shot 10 ga. I installed a super full choke and a set of rifle sights. It is pure terror on turkeys, and thankfully I only shoot it a couple times a year! Really it's about the same as a 3-1/2" 12 ga. I've actually shot clays with it before just to use up shot shells that didn't pattern well in it.

Never shot one of the autos but my uncle was a big time fanatic of goose hunting back in the 70s and he owned a couple of the 3 1/2" doubles. His brother was too and owned one as well. I shot the heck out of them, mind you this was when I was 12-18(I weighed 100# at 14). 2 7/8" for pheasant hunting and the 3 1/2" for ducks and geese. That 10 would reach a long ways. He was killed in a car accident when I was 18.
I loved shooting them but I never did get that much into goose hunting so I never bought one. I didn't think they kicked that bad back then. Certainly not as bad as the old single shot 12 I hunted with before I turned 15 and got my 12ga wingmaster. My cousin(his son) bought one of the 10 ga Ithaca autos when they first came out and always told me it didn't kick as hard as the old doubles but I never got to try it before he died.

Guy up the road from me has a double barreled 10ga choked full and full and has a hard plastic butt plate. Don't know the brand of the shotgun but he uses it every year for goose hunting. In his case, the gun isn't the oddity-- he is. He is 82-years old and probably doesn't go more than 150 pounds soaking wet. One thing about him -- he's got game.

When I was younger and shot the scatter guns more I had fun shooting a 10ga that I borrowed. I don't know now though.
Re: *OT* Ad In Paper Today
The big 10 ga. shell is a real behemoth (according to Mike). The 2-7/8" shell, not so much. The old 10s should have walloped you less than today's Ultra-mags.brucew44guns wrote:How much harder does a 10 smack you, than a 12? Always wondered about that.

I shot a friends browning 10 gauge at the skeet and trap range. Had a blast!!!! May have been one of the best days for me at the trap range. That rascal brought down clay birds at distances I would never shoot at critters. If I wasnt' down sizing, that would be on my wish list. Wanted to take it hunting for dove and get at those High flyers that always fly a few yards higher than my shotgun is effective at.

Re: *OT* Ad In Paper Today
I have an H&R Handi-Rifle with a seperate 3 1/2" 12 ga. Turkey barrel. I have shot 2 3/4" Magnums in that light gun and never again. H & R has a 10 ga. as an accessory barrel, and no thanks. Not that one for me.
I shot Slugs once in mine and never again.
Most shooter's I know that have 10 ga.'s shoot BP, you get a real big push when they goes off.

Re: *OT* Ad In Paper Today
My dad had one of the Spanish made 10ga. doubles back in the 70`s.
Every once in a while both barrels would fire when a single trigger was pulled. The 2 1/2oz. 3 1/2" (IIRC) mag is enough when one shot is fired.
He dumped the shot out of factory loads and replaced it with #4 buck.
We cut out a full size goose target and hung it on a fence. From 70yd. it would put 16-18 shot in the goose almost every time.

I had one do that to me a few years back. My shoulder didn't hurt, but I had to stop to make sure my nose wasn't broke she jumped up into my face that much.Chuck 100 yd wrote:My dad had one of the Spanish made 10ga. doubles back in the 70`s.

Re: *OT* Ad In Paper Today
I firead an H&R breakopen 10 gauge 'magnum' (longer shell I think?) that had been cut down to 19" and the stock shortened so the overall length was just an inch over legal limit; kind of looked like an AR 'shorty' stock.
Yow!!!!!!!!
Still, if you had to pull something out from behind the seat in a bad situation, I guess it would do.
