Well men. I've been busy working up a good load for my old Winchester 38-40. Too many loads to report on here, but to make a long story short, after trying a wide range of powders, I'm settling on 2400. We had about 3" of snow yesterday and the days are getting shorter and colder, so load development has not got too many weeks to go. In the meantime, I'm practicing twice a week with Old Savage, my Winchester 94 30-30 made in the year I was born. I usually send 20 rounds downrange per session from a free standing offhand position. I figure if that Whitetail deer is 100 yards away, it's a goner. If it is 150 yards away, it is a goner. If it is 200 yards away ..... well ..... I'd like to brace myself on something before I take the shot.
I was on the road last weekend, so I figured I'd take the day off today and take one of my sons fishing. Tried out a lake about 1/2 hour from the house. Launched the canoe and paddled around the lake looking for deeper holes using the sinking jig method. By gum! I got a decent Smallmouth Bass out of one of them, the only bass all afternoon. Still, it was great being out on the lake on a late fall day with my son. Here's a photo of the Old Geezer holding his bass. I really have to say that the Smallmouth Bass, with their golden tiger stripes just make me feel dadgummed happy.

Kirk: An old geezer who loves the smell of freshly turned earth, old cedar rail fences, wood smoke, a crackling fireplace on a snowy evening, pristine wilderness lakes, the scent of
cedars and a magnificent Whitetail buck framed in the semi-buckhorn sights of a 120-year old Winchester.
