Post by Mutt »

Found this at the gun range while Hubby shot his new anniversary present. He is house broken, will sit, lay down and come.
Does not bark and wake up neighbor (dog hater, likes to call the police).

Bad habit (1) Chase cats (in the house)
Bad habit (2) Digs very deep hole in back yard.
Bad habit (3 but last) Likes to eat mops.

That's 5 good things to 3 bad habits = 2 to the good, I hope. Hubby wants to name him Dog. Took offense to me naming him Mutt. What do you like?

The sire of my yellow lab male is named "Deeohgee"

Say that out loud and it makes sense.

I don't know diddly about naming dogs. I had a dog I called "Ralph" that looked like Benjii. Don't ask why, I don't know. Fred sounds good to me but so does Dog. The thing(s) I notice is/are:

1 - the dog is paying attention to Mutt which is a good sign
2 - you, Mrs. Mutt, are a patient soul.
3 - that dog needs a chew toy. Great distraction for dogs that like to chew and it is easier to distract them than to correct them.

4 - that dog might have and might in the future cost more than laptop but will save you both from high blood pressure, depression, and keep you physically active. A wonderful gift.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Namin' a dog, eh? Single syllable names work good, so do some double syllables. Our current foot warmer is "Burka". She, too, has a penchant for mops but learns quick with a good scolding. I'm glad she's past the puppy "eat anything in view" stage, but we keep a rawhide chew or two around to distract her.

"Dog" works good. Just for grins you could call him 'Cat' - confuse folks plenty when you call "Cat!!" and that dog comes running. "Mutt" - that's one of Burka's many extra names. It's usually prefaced by something like "stupid" as in "Burka, you stupid mutt" - but she doesn't care as long as it's accompanied by a good ear scratching and is uttered in non-threatening tones.

On the other hand, the Old Testament is replete with non-current names. :) Take a look through one or more of the "begat" sections. I'm sure you'll find something interesting that's not likely to offend anyone who drops in for a visit.

But "Dog" or "Mutt" work plenty fine once you work out the details with, well, Mutt... ;-) :-D

OK, some of my favorite dog names:

Fritz
Schultz (these first two are because of his German Shepard content ;) )
Winchester (Winny for short)
Ruger
Guinness (he is black and tan) - Guinny
Ranger is good
Gunner is good - but Gunny might be a tad better
Walker
Marlin or Marly
Ted
Bob
Jack (that's my name but makes a cool dog name too)

Our two dog's names are:

Button (female) and Lance (male) - these are both hifaluttent pups left from my wife's breeding/showing period of time.... great dogs though - Welshe Terriers. They're black and tan too :)

What ya ought to do is put up a "Dog Found" sign at the range with your info on it so that the dog can be returned to it's rightful owner. The dog looks to be in too good a shape to be a stray out on it's own for awhile. Somebody's probably out looking for their dog.

What makes you think they haven't tried? A lot of uh, people drop their unwanted pets in the country - believe me, you can't go and try and track down their owners - way way too many for that. This may be that kinda thing. But I'll let them speak for themselves.... just shouldn't jump to conclusions IMHO.

Because they didn't say they had!!!

Doesn't take that much effort to post a sign at the spot a dog is found.

"...........may be that kinda thing" but you don't know.

I live in the country and know all about abandoned dogs. We get them all the time and turn them over to the local shelter which finds them new homes.

If they don't want to post a sign then notify the local cops, pound, etc. so that if someone does come along looking for their dog they will at least have a chance to find it.

Jake was my first thought as well. I like short hard words for dog names as when using the name
in a hard tone gets the dogs attention very quickly.

My last dog was a pound mix breed I named Jenny cuz it suited her.

This one seems bright so you should be able to name anything and he will respond,
another option would be to try names you like and see what he responds best to.

Have 2 bed warmers, 60# black lab named BOO since the first time I saw her she was playing peek a boo in and out of my daughters coat. Rescued from animal shelter and been an absolute sweetheart. Other is part terrier and "only GOD knows for sure" named Poopie, we won't go into that. Rescued from litter as she was the runt. Has radar ears but is good home alarm system.

How about naming it DAMM IT? Then when you say DAMM IT stop eating that mop or come here DAMM IT you will be using it's proper name. Beautiful dog and a awfully good person to take one that size in. The cat thing will pass with time. We have 2 in addition to the dogs.

Good on ya Mutt & Mrs. Mutt.

Looks like y'all have done as much as possible to find where your new dog came from.

Sorry if I came across a bit cross/harsh but I had a similar thing happen to me a few years back. My dog wandered to the back of MY PROPERTY and a "goody-two-shoes" lady down the road scoooped it up and took it home. My dog didn't like that and it bit the woman pretty hard on the hand and arm -- took several stitches to close all the wounds. She took it to the pound and they traced it back to me via the chip we had installed in him. She had the gall to try to sue us but I reminded her (with the backing of our Sheriff) that I would then have her arrested for coming on private property and stealing my dog.

Anyway, enjoy your new dog. Looks like a great dog.

Jumping to conclusions - making accusations....
Why don't ya just say "Na na na na na"!!! What can I say? Sometimes, I'm a jumping to conclusions kinda guy!!! BUT if you took any notice, I'll be the first one to swallow humble pie when I'm proven wrong and apologize.
OK,

Na na na na na. :o

Sorry :) I certainly have my share of posts that I'd like to retract :)

Its just that you gave me so much grief for pointing this out initially. 8)

Maybe I missed it, but I can't believe his name isn't

JEFF!

you know,

Mr. and Mrs. Mutt, and JEFF!

I guess I'm too easily amused, but that'd be my pick. Dog would be my second choice.

"Rex" As in king. A magnificent animal!

"Gunnar" Scandinavian name, sounds close enough to "Gunner" for me.

"Loki" The Scandinavian God of Mischief. Maybe that fits?

I have an ole hounddog named Raven that took up with me, but she comes to "kitty kitty". I named our three cats: Thing, Goldie, and Ratface.

Hello Everyone,
Well it is official now, the name for the dog is.....D O G You should have seen their faces at the vets Friday when they asked me what was my dog's name and I said "Dog". Of course I blamed it on my Hubby and the nice people on his gun forum . I have called him Doggie for short and Hubby said it is an insult to such a fine looking Shepard.
Dog (a.k.a. Doggie) received his 1st set of shots, got wormed again and weighs 47.7 lbs. He is between 9-12 months old and as healthy as a horse. You know what is next on the agenda...have to get fixed.
Yep, life is good!!!! Mrs. Mutt
