Re: OT-remember when?
It looks like I drew about $55.00 a month when I took Basic at Fort Leonard Wood Mo in 1958.

It says $342 something but I remember checks of about $150 or so, twice a month. After uniforms, haircuts, etc, I think it was down to about $100 for 2 weeks. About 3 weeks ago I spent near to that on a TANK of gas.

I remember when $361.20 a month was grazin' in tall grass fer a particular young E-1.
Now 25x that ain't quite enough.
Ah, for simpler times...

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

E-2 under 2 was a whopping $99.00. After income tax, social security and the mandatory 15.00 or whatever it was for the US Savings Bond, I think I netted about $70.00. But then, smokes were $1.10 a carton, beer was 75 cents a pitcher, a new pair of boots could be had for $6.00. Still, some might thin times for many years.
Re: OT-remember when?
Wow, started at about $124 a month. Minimum wage was $1.40 so a month's wages would be $224. Then again, we worked overtime and weekends for free, so figure it worked out to say 12 hours a day (being nice here), figuring at time and a half for overtime, a civilian minimum wage earner would get $392. Conclusion, boys, we sure didn't do it for the money. Something that many of those that didn't serve would understand.
And yet, there was always money for beer.
