knives

Post by mescalero1 »

Just pulled out my Cold Steel CarbonV Trailmaster Bowie after not looking at it for a long time.
Rust spot ! port side of blade less than dime size, it is polishing out, have no idea how it got there.
If you have not seen your blades in a while , get them out and look at them, this is a bummer.

Good idea.......A little Fluid Film or WD40 would go a long way to avoiding that....

Idiot,
I don't know how, the humidity is the same at your place as at mine,
I think the sheath got a wet spot on it.

Do not store knives in sheaths, not good idea. Same as firearms, they can rust.

Carbon V is very highly susceptible to rust; been there, experienced that, and I did not store in in the sheath. I had used a product called Birchwood Casey Sheath on it, before it rusted. After I polished out the little rust flowers, I used a light application of cold blue to give the blade a bit of a weathered, antique finish. A friend liked the knife with that look, so I sold it to him.

The girls are doing very well...thanks for asking Mescalero. Lindsay is doing very well in College and Carly is happy, well educated, and enjoying Alaska with her husband. Lucky as heck I reckon...

I have some pics to share whith you of Alaska and a Mule Deer taken off of my property last week. My neighbor shot the deer while I was flipping steaks on the grille :) ...He's a big one 6x6....I'm waiting for my neighbor to e-mail the pics. I haven't forgot...

That was so long ago, I am not sure. IIRC, I gave it a light application, and wiped it way fairly quickly, so it would not be very dark. I think I may have been following some directions with the specific intent of just giving it a antique-ish look. I may have even pre-treated it with something else first. The shine was pretty much gone after I put a now-forgotten grade of steel wool to the blade. Sorry, can't be more specific.

Oh, BTW, I did not pre-treat with lemon juice. I did read about using lemon juice to "age" carbon steel, but that was well after I sold off the Cold Steel Trailmaster.

Just got a catalogue in the Post today...

These go for $5-$7 each. Flexible, uber-sharp little knives. This is what the Processors (& I)use when a stiff blade isn't required.

Ever since I started using Ballistol (love that stuff!) for cleaning up after Black powder I've noticed it does a good job keeping rust off my knives too, and it's supposed to be good for the leather sheath. Just before hunting season I wash them off and wipe them down with Olive oil. I like Ballistol but not enough that I want dressed out deer meat to taste like it.
