Scout Scope Recommendation?

Post by GonnePhishin »

Can anybody recommend a good scout scope for use on a Marlin 1894 in 357, and what kind of base to use as well?

Blessings to All :D

I was at first reluctant to answer this post, thinking that multiple answers would be forthcoming from the fine folks here.
But, I shoot a Redfield 2 and 1/2 power pistol scope from another launch platform.
It performs well.

with it ...

good luck ...

Big fan of the Leupold scout scope and the Warne Q.D. set up. Leatherwood makes an extended eye relief variable power scope but I have not tried it. It is on backorder everywhere but I think 86er has some experience with that scope. It supposedly is pretty good. 1886.

I have always been a big fan of Leupold optics - so I would say their scout scope, although I beleive Burris makes a fine product and at one time had a 2.5x forward eye releif scout scope.

When I dabbled in the whole scout thing - I used a Bushnell 2x pistol scope with good results.

I have two scout mounted rifles, a Wild West Guns Co-Pilot, and a Steyr Scout rifle - Both carry leopold scout scopes and rings.

I have a Leupold scout on my 1895M / .450 and my Springfield SOCOM16.
I've put quite a few rounds through both and have been really pleased with them.
I've been in the market for another and have been thinking of something cheaper for the 336 I'm working on.
XS mounts on both the 336 and 1895.

If you are looking for a little bigger objective, the Leatherwood Hi-Lux scout scope is 2X7X32, comes with a lifetime warranty and runs around $110. Mine has held up to hundreds of full-boat 45-70 loads with no problems. I also have a Leupold IER 2.5X that is as good but less light gathering and smaller field of view. I utilize a one piece base with Leupold QR rings.

I appreciate all the responses to my question.

I will probably go with the Leupold, but the vortex scope looks interesting.

Not to steal your thread but I have been interested in the leatherwood scope for some time but it has been on backorder for a very long time and the anticipated arrival date is constantly pushed back. After reading your original question again... the XS scout base may interest you. 1886.

After first trying the Leupold and the Burris Scout scopes, I sold them and went with a Weaver Classic 2x pistol scope:

The mount, from day 1, has been the XS LeverScout/Weaver rings.
