OT-Went hunting Saturday..

Post by morgan in nm »

Drew out for restricted muzzleloader hunt for a buck. I have gone hunting a total of 2 times unsuccessfully. I have never killed a deer because I just don't get the time. However, this time I was successful.

I am the fellow on the left. A 5-point aint too bad for a first deer, especially with an old Green River .54 rd ball. I would like to tell you all that I used great skill to bag this fellow but I will be truthful. He walked right up to me, got within 25ft, and I let him have it. What do yall think of my makeshift hoist? It works pretty good for me.

Way to go. Great deer. I've seen guys that have hunted more than once not get a deer as good as that. Hope you get many more.

Good looking rifle too.

Thanks folks. I went ahead and processed it myself with steaks and hamburger and so far, it is good. The critter had about an inch of back fat on him so I didn't have to add any for the hamburger. I forgot to mention yesterday but I got him on the Capitan Mtn in NM and the grass was very tall this year. He had been eating a lot of pinon nuts and cactus fruit. Absolutely no wild taste at all. The steaks are a little tough but then again, I don't know really the best methods of cooking them. To be honest, I wasn't sure the rifle was going to fire because I was using caps that were much older than the me but it did good. I have had that rifle for about 10 years and when I first seen it in a gun shop, I seen that it was made in roosevelt, utah, so I thought I would give her a try.

BTW, does that smile ever wear off? :D

Funny you should mention the coughing, it took a few seconds to see him after I pulled the trigger. For the load, I know I am going to get blasted for this but its difficult to get 2f around here so I used 90 grns of 3f goex for the .54. It was just enough to cover the ball in my hand. And for those folks who cast their own and are unhappy with wrinkled bullets, I took him with such bullet. I bought a lee mold and was having great difficulties getting the mold properly seasoned but I didn't want to toss them back in the pot. I thought they would be good for target practice and it ended up killing a deer. Of course, at that range, I don't think a 4 yr old child could have missed

Thanks for the great compliments. I wish I lived closer to everybody so we could have a cookout. :D

Don't worry about 3f dude I use it in my 12g :D And wrinkled balls! Have you tried sooting the mold with a oil lamp? Also hold the mold in the lead to go it warmed up. To be honest I usually just cast untill they come out right.

That is a nice buck and your rifle is really a great looking piece, looks to be very well made.I use 90 grains 0f 3fg over a .451 patched round ball from my Kentucky rifle and it laid one on the ground early Monday morning, one shot stops on the last three deer.I don't think I need a bolt action muzzle loader with a scope and a set of $700.00 camo clothes and boots to kill deer. You done real good.
