.22 Ammo ?

Post by ceb »

While I have a fair amount of it put back already, mostly Remington and Federal bulk packs from Wally World, I was thinking of adding to the stores. Ifin you was going to buy a case or two for hunting and plinking and just in case, what would buy and were is the best place to get it?

 For certain!

Most of my guns like Winchester PowerPoints best... However, I have invested in a couple of cases. Also have some other brands/loadings that do well when modified slightly.

If I had a good supply of ammo I'm happy with I would get a few boxes of oddball stuff just to make it a bit more interesting at the range, seeing how the different types perform in my guns.

You may even find a brand that out shoots your favorite ammo.

40 gr. Federal 510 champion's, they shoot well in most of my rifles & handguns. Wally has them for $1.47 a box in my area. I am stocking up on all I can get my hands on now. At least a brick or two per week.

I ran a couple of group runs of five shots and out of my Remington modified 581 the standard diviation is 8. My 581 is now very close to a 541T. A 581 action & barrel restocked in a 541 stock, pillar and glass bedded, reworked trigger with an adjustment screw & overtravel added, measures in the ounces.. Scoped with a BSA, Sweet 22 3 X 9 A0.

This piece is a sporter not a target rifle.

With match ammo this rifle shoots under 1" at 100 yards.

One can never have enough 22 ammo.

I always use Winchester T22 target ammo (vintage guns) and buy online wherever I find the best
price (including shipping). I have bought from:

I have used Winchester super X since I was a kid and I still use it most, of my guns like it just fine. I do buy bulk pack ammo and experiment with random match ammo, but for general field use it has mainly been Winchester.
I tried some Federal Auto Match that was incredibly accurate in a rebarreled 10/22. I was impressed with its consistency.

In general, I've been pleased with ALL of the Aquila offerings - including their "cheap" "Centurian" RNL brand. IIRC I paid $15 for my last brick of 500.

Bulk Pack Rem Golden Bullets are good too - if a bid more difficult to pocket in pre-counted amounts.

YMMV, but I've noticed that the dry coated stuff like T 22 doesn't develop the the white oxide over time like some brands of the plated bullets do, however the Remington gold type plating hasn't developed any and some I had was at least 30 years old & shot fine. Something to consider.

Indeed YMMV... There's a (relative) bunch of Remington 100 pack gold colored plated ammo down here - and there's about 5-10 duds per box from what I've heard various guys saying. No big deal - except that you're limited to 100 rounds every six months - which means that ANY duds are unacceptable. The gov't monopoly of course will do nothing about it. It's just tough luck. I heard they got a new shipment of 22 ammo and such in, but don't know what they brought in this time. I still don't have a 22 down here.

I shoot Winchester Super X Power Point 40gr Lead Hollow Point .22LR rounds exculusively in all my .22LR rifles and handguns. The reason is that they shoot well in all my guns. I've got 2-cases of them on hand and I'll probably pick up another case this coming year. I've also probably got another 1,000 or so total rounds of various misc. branded .22LR ammo in an ammo box that I've picked up from time to time over the years.

Can't have too much .22LR on hand as they are fun to shoot and go fast.

I think I'll stock up a bit on 22 ammo also. But at the prices I'm seeing on the two sites above, I'm gonna pay Wal-Mart a visit first.

See if you can find some SK Standard Plus or Wolf Match Target (same as SK). Great match grade, standard velocity, ammo. Extremely good quality control by the German company that makes it.

Went out this evening and shot a box of Winchester Super X through my 9422. I've probably had this brick 15yrs, since the store I bought it at has been closed at least that long. First 5 rounds at 25yds off my portable bench, no sandbags or any thing like that, just hand rested went into 1" with 4 of those in about 3/8". This with factory sights and 55yr old eyes! Maybe I need to look for more of these.

Do you know how to remove your Trigger assy from the action ? If not it is a very easy removal.

Brian Voelker

Brian is one of the top Remington mechanics in the country.

I removed the trigger from my action and sent is Priorty Mail. He reworks your trigger and returns.

$70.00 includes the return shipping.

I also had a second screw pillar added to the action. It is where the wood screw holds the trigger guard in place. This was done here in Phoenix by a local GS who specializes in stock and bedding issues. My action is like it is held in the stock by a vise.

For additional info. E-mail me your Phone number.

Several years ago the local K-Marts would carry the T22 ("Wildcats") and run them on sale for $9.99/brick. I doubt you can find them that low now, but I'd add several thousand of these for starters.
