I have the Master Catalog #30 sitting on my computer desk for some time now and noticed the 1-800 number on the side......1-800-243-3220.
Do you think that number got picked 'cause ol' Larry likes the .243 Win and the .32-20?

I've had that number etched in my brain for many years. Certainly an easy number to remember.

I'm betting that they submitted a number of caliber combos and that's the first one that was available.
Any calibers would be easy to remember 308-3006, 300-3030, etc.

Bingo!
I've seen a lot of gun stores with 3006 as the last four digits of their phone number!
