Wifes first squirl !

Post by Nath »

My bride wanted a walk today so I suggested she should try for a squirrel.
After a bit of time familiarising her self with the safe use of a hammer gun we set off, I was hopefull of seeing plenty but only saw one.
We had a nice stop under a large pine to make coffee and a wee smoke sheltering from the wind and then checked some oaks but still nothing. We had three hours of sneaking about but it was on the way back that one ran up a pine and fortunatly hid itself instead of running through the branches.
It took some time to get Jayne to spot it but when she did she managed to hit it in the leg and then make a good chest shot, Jaynes first squirrel!
Jayne loves the 9422 and says it is her favourite gun :D

The squirrel was a male one and I think that when it saw a woman with a gun it just froze, I kinder understand

The deal was if Jayne got two then I had to make a stew to eat at work next week, well one ain't enough is it.

Congratulations, Jayne! We don't have a huntable population of squirrels around here. I've only seen about four in 13 years - only two in the wild. The local variety I've seen is BRIGHT red in color, they look like a mean kid with a hair dye set got ahold of them. And they're real tiny. Now, back in '06 while up in Missouri I took these with my Ruger Single Six. GOOD eating indeed...

Another thing - is one not enough? You can make some decent vitals with even just one squirrel. Cook it up and debone it then strew it through the stew... :) They make great eating. You might try making it into coxinhas like my darling bride did. There's something about Brazilian recipes made by Colombian women with US ingredients that make for great eating. :) :D

Yes Sir I sure know they are good eating but I have my eyes on pheasant and a muzzleloader any day soon
I use a slow cooker for most stuff and it takes some filling, one squirl in there with veg and spice and it would be more like a vegtable only meal, don't worry the deals still on. Jayne thinks they are horrible varmints and shakes her head in disgust when I do tuck in some, so making me do something horrid in her eyes will drive her for sure

Aaaahhh.... the good ol' "crock pot" or slow cooker. Great way to prepare a meal but unless you've got one of the tiny "personal sized" ones, one squirrel is indeed a bit small for proper cooking. Even the large fox squirrel leaves a LOT of space in a typical slow cooker. :) But freezers work wonders for preserving meat until you've got a batch saved up. I fellow I know used to sneak his squirrels into a corner of the walk in freezer at the college where we both worked in the kitchen. He'd save them up and fix 'em up on a hot plate in his room on Sundays when the cafeteria was shut down... What you really need is a couple of armadillos to flesh out the pot of stew with, that'd probably turn her stomach for sure. :D

Congrats that is a nice squirrel. They are a blast to hunt and I only wish the limit was more here so I could stay out longer and hunt.

That's a pretty good sized squirrel if you ask me. I wouldn't take but two of them to feed a family.

Paul,

Down here we call armadillos possum on the half shell. With bar b que sauce on them you can't hardly tell it from pulled pork the way my mom fixes it.

She was pleased, you know a shriek of excitment
At one point Jayne nearly handed me the gun because she could not find the squirl but she didn't and stuck at it even though it was hurting craning her head up so high and holding the rifle up too.
I bet if I remind her next time about the time I,,,,,errr well I won't tell you about that but I bet it would make her get it with the first shot!!
