I noticed I was running low on pork, so....

Post by draperjojo »

We made an 80 mile run to the cattle ranch and spent maybe an hour hiking around the 10,000 acre ranch when we spotted 2 hogs about 200 yards away on the other side of a big pond. We got about 75 yards closer and took both hogs. My 13 year old daughter took pictures and video on that trip.

Do you think they were more like domestic pigs that got loose in the wild
or were they more like wild boar ? Seems to me the wild boar have
bigger tusks and are meaner and tougher ? ? I 've never shot one
personally.

I wish I could tell you I took it with one of my "92"s or even my "336"........but I had the 300 Win Mag with me that day. There are Russian Boar on the property, sheep, etc but the old "under 500 lb" farm pigs running wild taste the best to me. Its a working cattle ranch that they stock with other animals too. Those pigs will eat anything including each other. You can shoot one, and the one next to it may run over and start eating it, or if a pig is giving birth and there are other pigs around, the piglets might not make it. These things are mean and will charge you. A guy I work with was up there hunting and got charged by a 400 lb er and he was shooting black powder and all he had for a sidearm was his wife's 380 auto and he emptied that 380 before it finally dropped at his feet. One of the guys that hunted with us last time went up and got a 900 lb er. He was shooting a Thompson 270 and fumbled a second shell in that break barrel when that big hog charged him after the first shot. Personally, I like being overgunned for hogs especially when I have one of my kids with me. I've taken 3 hogs off of that ranch and have been able to put mine down with one bullet. My 11 year old went through Hunter Safety and they talked about humanely putting animals down while hunting, and I don't want my kids to see animals suffer. If the animals ever do get to close, I carry a .44 Mag sidearm.

Good shootin! Do you aim for the ear? That's the surest way to drop them - a heart/lung can see them going 150+ yards before dropping... not good if the brush is thick.

I know a lot of guys that use .223's to shoot em in the head. Precise shot placement. Also doesn't ruin any meat and you get less stress which means better meat.

I did a head shot on mine when he leaned over to drink. The bullet went out his neck. Both hogs dropped in their tracks.

Nice hogs. I like my 300 winnie mag too. I'd be willing to try it with my '86 45-90 though. Through both shoulders and I think they'd give it up.

Where in the head?
Right behind the right ear when he leaned over to drink and it came out down by his neck/jaw.

I'm sorry, I was inquiring of O.S.A.K. where the .223 shooters aim for.
I was not descriptive enough in my question.
