OT - Winchester 1885 Replacement Barrel
Anyone here happen to know if a barrel from a Uberti made 1885 will fit an original Winchester 1885? I have a Low Wall with bore issues, and found a Uberti barrel for less than what a reline would cost me.
Re: OT - Winchester 1885 Replacement Barrel
The threads will be metric on the Uberti, and the Winchester will be U.S. standard pitch. It may be possible to rethread the Uberti barrel, but I doubt it. Your 1886 will loose less value with a reline than a non-original barrel.

The current barrel is a shot-out reline already (was converted to 22 Hornet). This is a refinished shooter, not a high dollar collector, so affecting the value doesn't bother me - I just want to shoot it. I plan on keeping the original barrel anyway, should I choose to move it in the future. I was told by the guy with the Uberti barrel that the threads are standard pitch. Could this be right, or is he just mistaken?

Measure the Shank Dia of the Uberti, believe the Win 1885 dia is fairly large; around .935 . not in my shop right now so don't hold me to it. If the shank dia of the Uberti is the same size or larger, then the answer is yes, it can be rethreadded to fit. 1885's have a 16 TPI standard 60 deg V thread so its easy to cut.
Also check location of dovetails under the barrel, if its off by more than a couple of thou, that can affect function or wood to metal fit of the FE.

One other thing is the ejector, they are caliber specific, so if you want to change ctg size you will need to change or modify the ejector. They are hardened, so either machine with carbide tooling or anneal them prior to machining then re harden them. I just made the barrels & converted a couple of High Walls to 50 Ex, simple straight forward machining operations.

Killer...
Just noticed that you stated Low Wall, sorry, believe the Low Wall Shank size is the same as 73/92/94s : .808 with 16 TPI
Sorry about the confusion

Thanks Mike. Hopefully I'll be able to get this fella up and shooting.

And does anyone happen to know when Winchester moved their patent date from the bottom tang to the top tang on the 1885? All the markings on mine are sharp as original even with the refinish (even the small "16" in front of the lever is sharp) but for some reason there's no serial number. But I can't see someone who was so careful with the other markings completely remove the serial number.

I think the 94 threads are 20 TPI.

Well, I bought the barrel anyway. I figure for $115 US to my door for a new unused barrel, it's worth it even if I have to get if cut back, rethreaded and chambered. Hopefully it won't come to that.
