OT Gastronomical Festival of the Cat
OK guys, I expect a few recipes before the "Cat Lady" reads this post!
ANIMAL rights groups are up in arms over an annual festival in Peru that serves up hundreds of fried CATS to locals.
The 'Gastronomical Festival of the Cat' – dubbed the 'Massacre of the Moggies' – sees townsfolk in Canete, near Lima, feast on the fluffy pets for two days.
They believe that eating cat burgers – and fried cat legs and tails – can cure bronchial disease.
It is also believed that feline meat serves as an aphrodisiac.
The cats are bred especially for this festival – which takes place at the end of September on the Day of Santa Ifigenia.
But it has generated fury among animal rights groups.
A PETA spokesman said: "“If Peruvians really eat poor old Moggy because they think his meat cures bronchitis, that’s about as bizarre as it gets, although remember that Asians eat monkey bits thinking that will cure their impotence and even Europeans butcher poor old Bessie the cow or Henny Penny the hen, because they see them as nothing more than a bit of nourishment.
“Having toured slaughterhouses for dogs in Taiwan, horses in Texas, and chickens and cows in Europe, PETA’s staff says the last thing we need to do is add yet another poor animal to the list of those being frightened and slaughtered for a taste.”

PETA would happly and selfrighteously complain about starving people in Africa eating a locust infestation.
They don't deserve air.

No, and I was surprised to learn, while in England; that words that are non-offesive here take on a whole different meaning in England.
And the street goes both ways English words have a benign meaning there, are not spoken in polite company here.

Well now, I'm a card carrying member of PITA and I think that the Peruvians have a right to eat felix if they want to!
Oh, this may not be the same PITA that ya'll are referring to.... it's People Eating Tasty Animals!
It think the other PITA is a PITA. Really.

PETA does more damage than good. I don't know anyone who favors cruelty to any animals, but by attacking honest sportsman and people who naturally enjoy meat they lose everyone but the nut-case extremists.

Is it really cruel if you kill them fast?

Re: OT Gastronomical Festival of the Cat
You know, we had a mess of marinated and grilled chicken thighs for dinner. Didn't even think about it.
To the Asians, cat = chicken. They eat rats too. And all kinds of things that we are squeemish about.
Much of French cusine was developed during WWI and WWII - what do you think got them onto escargot? Fondue is a great way to use old stale bread. French onion soup? Ditto - and onions which were hearty and grew wild. Sweetbread, etc...
In our own country the Black culture and poor Southern culture has developed its own "French-like" cusine that was born of necessity - pig's feet, chiterlings...
And the Mexicans will smoke most any pork entrail and serve it on a tortilla... I've had it in Nuevo Laredo at the El Rancho.
We are culinary woosies

Re: OT Gastronomical Festival of the Cat
I think 90% of the PETA crowd are awkward pre-teen and teenage girls, based on what I've read on their website. Another 5% are teenage boys unsure of their sexual identity, and the remaining 5% are 20-something liberal lawyers who keep all the looney teenagers stirred up. It is a money-making venture for the lawyers at the top.Ysabel Kid wrote:PETA does more damage than good. The really scary ones are the eco-terrorists and the animal liberation front terrorists who bomb and burn homes and businesses and set up boobytraps for hunters, loggers, etc. to maim and kill.

You know I have a saying I will eat just about anythig that doesn't ry and eat me first even then I would kill it and and give it a try.
We Americans are way to picky when it comes to what we stuff in our face.
As to the language barrier. If you look at it from the prospective that we dont speak the same language you do all right i.e. the brits speak English we Americans speak American our friends in OZ speak Australian etc. etc. Case in point we use F@@ as a word to refer to a homosexual but it means a cigarette in england and what the heck is a wanker? This is why many Americans dont understand Monty Python.
