Deal or no deal, .35 remington Marlin 336?

I have a line on a fairly nice Marlin 336 in .35 remington. I'm looking for a good gun for east Texas whitetails and hogs. I realize the downside to this is that the .35 ammo is harder to find. This is a pre-safety model. The guy wants $285 for it. Is this a good deal, or should I just look for a 30-30?

It's pretty fair deal...if you don't like it, you can flip it and prolly break even......

I guess I should note that I have a BAR 7mag for long range shooting, so what I'm primarily interested in is short range (well under 100 yards) deer and pig gun in the woods of east Texas. I suspect I'll pull off the scope and replace it with a Williams peep sight.

Any other recommendations? Yea or nay?

No shipping? Local deal? Buy it. Even if you had to pay shipping, that's still a good deal.

You will really like the 35 Remington, trust me.

Yes, it's local. I have to drive over to Dallas to get it, but that's not TOO far out of the way.

So, you guys think this will serve the purpose as well as a 30-30? Most ballistics that I have seen discussed seems to say the 30-30 is slightly flatter shooting and has a little less recoil, but that the 35 rem has a bigger bullet and really packs a punch.

No flies on the 30-30 but the 35 Rem would be better on hogs in particular IMHO. You have a Bass Pro and now a Cabelas up there right? They will both have 35 Rem - probably several brands. I recommend the good ol reliable Remington Core Locts - 200 grain. I'm pretty sure that walmart carries this caliber too - probaly just the remington load.

Do you like to shoot cast bullets? If so, the 35 Rem is usually great with them - as long as their sized .359-360" and you can get the standard velocity with them w/o leading.

I think the 35 recoils about the same as the 30-30.

If you get it and it isn't shooting accurately or the group is shifting - I'd take the scope off as that's probably the culprit. If you need a scope, then put a nice 4x Weaver or Nikon Prostaff on her. But that scope may be just fine.

ETA - I've found that a lot of times that rifles with inexpensive scopes on them are sold because they're not giving good accuracy - and its the scope... a good way to pick up a bargain!

For hogs I prefer the 35 to the 30-30. The difference in recoil is negligible and the ammo is not that hard to find. I think you will be pleased with the way the 200 Remington ammo puts hogs, deer etc down. You will not have a problem with penetration even on end to end shots. I don't know if you could do much better than the 35 for short to mid range hog hunting.

Just bought a 336/ .35 over the weekend that's going to be a gift for one of the boys.

Didn't have any problem finding dies, bullets. Midway was out of brass but checked two more sites and Graf's had it.

Also local Gander Mountian had plenty of Hornady and Remington in stock.

Willing to bet any shop worth while, at least in the Eastern us is going to have a few
boxes lying around.

Sounds like a deal to me.

Well, what the heck, it's only money, right? Since the stock market sucks, maybe my $285 can be used for something better than toilet paper.
