Took my son to SASS NE Regional

Post by longarm4146 »

After playing his final year of football in college last year I was able to make a fall match and take him with me. NC to Athens WV then off to Frederick MD...475 miles. We got there Wed night and got a good nights sleep. thurs we headed to range to check out vendors and shoot some long-range side matches. 62 degrees at noon with 15 mph winds. boy did we have a blast and that old winchester 1894 TD 38-55 put all dem other guns to shames. 3 rds sight-in and one adj on elevation. Target was steel plate cut in shape of buffalo head staring straight on (kinda like a triangle) 14"X20" or so at 200 yds. 5 hits off hand in 23.6 seconds and i never shot it again....Tried with the SRC but ladder sight was in between at that distance and 4 hits was most I could get.......Then me and son got in "peeing match" on the long range pistol caliber match, 100yds off hand at 12X18 or so target......I put up a pretty good time with 5 hits but after about 6 or 7 attempts he beat it with a 5.9 sec run with all 5 hits.....using my 30" '73 in 45 Colt on my final run I shut him up for good with a 5 hit run of 4.32 and in the end both scores held. then to main match. we both shot a little slower than we'd like on day one but shot pretty good on day 2, of course all we won there was an invitation back next year. We went to the horse track in charlestown Friday night had a few drinks, watched some races, and made a donation to the slot machines, eat a great meal at the casino buffet. This is the first time he's been off with me a a big shoot and was old enough to be treated like a grown man (hell, he's 6'6" 280lbs)......We had a great time together, a great time with our other pards from NC, and a great time with new pards from other states......We enjoyed some good refreshments, he chased every skirt that he saw and my wife was absolutely envious that she wasn't there. I hope theres a lot more of these weekends left but you never can tell so i'll try to make the best of everyone we get, even if i do have to foot the tab. :D

sounds like you had a blast!
Are you going to Last Stand in Orlando Florida?
The Cowboys TV show should be there and maybe
Shooting USA might show up! they were both there
last year. I am going to try to make it...and it will
be my first match....if i can get the equipment together.

Sounds like my future.... I hope.

We take our boy, 12 years old, with us, when we go and shoot monthys. Sometimes he shoots, sometimes he doesnt.

Lately he and a buddy (age 10) have become a bit more interested in shooting and hitting the targets!

Well, this past weekend at the Old Fort Parker Charity Shoot, near Grosbeck, Texas, my boy shot a CLEAN MATCH!

dang Proud of him! :D

I look forward to the future.
