How to tell if it is a Marlin Texan?

Post by WCF3030 »

I have a Marlin 30-30 with the "slim" forearm and straight stock that I will be selling for funds for my K-9 search and resue dog/ equipment.
If some one could clue me in on the particulars of what makes a Marlin Texan a Texan I'd be grateful.

Thanks

There are three Marlin 336 Texans, all of which (of course) have straight-grip stocks:

(1954-1983) Model 336T - 18 1/2" bbl (1983 only) or 20" bbl, with saddle ring (1965-71 only). Also in .44 Mag (1965-1967 only)

(1962-1963) Model 336 DT (Deluxe Texan) - select wood w/map of Texas on buttstock.

(1984-87) Model 336TS - 18 1/2" bble, square lever, crossbolt safety.

Date your gun via the serial number.

OK

Date of manufacture 1978.
No "T" on the barrel just 336.

I'm sorry - I guess I wasn't clear.

All 20", and some 18 1/2", barreled, straight-gripped Marlins, made between 1954 and 1987 are referred to by Marlins as "Texans", and I listed the variations so you could see which variation yours happened to be.

It appears to be a 336T (the barrel should be so marked, but I guess anything's possible), and as such should have a 20" bbl and no saddle ring.

Keep in mind that it was (and still is) a common swap to switch out a PG buttstock. lever & bottom metal for straight grip parts, to "make" a "Texan".

I can't recall when Marlin started introducing the squared lever, but at first it was intermixed with the remaining stock of round levers.

I can't think of one I've seen marked with a "T".

This one has a 20" barrel, no saddle ring, and a squared lever.
Thanks for your help.
I'll take some pics and list in the classifieds.

I know I have, but it's been quite a few years since I've seen any straight-gripped 336's (except for one Marauder), here in New England.

Can't say positively for the 336 Texans but the .444 Texans were marked with a T on the barrel.

I have 3 straight grip marlins, 18.5, (1982) a 20" saddlering (1965) and a 20" no saddlering (1963) with the origional hang tag. On the tag Marlin refers to it as a texan. I have never seen a 336 marked with a T or Texan

I'd never seen a .444 marked with a T or Texan until someone on this forum posted the picture I posted.

I guess it's like everything else. Never say never. Just because you/we haven't ever seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I have owned a pile of straight grip 336 rifles with 16.5, 18.5 and 20" barrels over the years and none were marked T. All were either 336RC or just 336. They are neat rifles and seem to go perfectly with a Williams or Lyman receiver sight.
