way OT wood question

Post by Rusty »

We had a rough weekend this weekend past. drove from Fla to Ohio to pick up some things from the estate of my wife's brother who passed away about a month ago. We had planed to stay a few days but when going through the items she just couldn't bare but one day of it. More about that later.

One of the things that she brought back was an old porch rocker that belonged to her great aunt. One of her fondest memories is of the aunt sitting on the porch in the rocker when she was expecting a visit. The question is this... The rocker is sound but the wood is old and dry. We would never allow anyone to sit in it for fear that it would break, it's that dry. I intend to scrape the remains of the old paint off, or at least what's left of it. To preserve it I was thinking of putting several coats of lemon oil type furniture oil to try and bring the wood back some. Then after the oil has soaked in and stabilized a bit I was thinking of a good oil based paint.
If anyone has anything on this I'd appreciate the advice. It's only going to hold a Teddy bear or something, it's just for looks and sentiment.

Thanks,
Rusty <><

Rusty,

This product is fantastic and I think would bring out the beauty of that antique rocker! I also use it on my rifle stocks with the best results from among the many stock products I've tried.

Sorry to hear about your BIL. My condolences to your family.

Vic,

Do you know if that product will put any kind of moisture back into the wood?

Rusty,
Any product that has linseed oil will put the moisture back in. For old Civil War era gunstocks that really dried out, I use a mixture of linseed oil and turpentine. I am presently in Colorado and cannot remember the ratio I use. Just "Google" French polish, and follow the formula.--------------Sixgun

Do you think it would accept an oil based paint over the French polish finish?

I'm thinking it should.. oil on oil after all.
