OT - Chinks

I know a lot of people on the forum also have horses, hunt and work with them. I'm looking for a new set of quality (more than likely custom) chinks and would like to know who you would suggest. I've got my own preferences, but thought I'd ask others on the forum with their own preferred maker(s) and styles. That could even include Armitas.

Chinks are an Americanized form of Mexican Armitas. They're shorter and a lot lighter than full chaps. They started in the south where the summer temperatures make it almost impossible to wear full chaps. Summer in the middle of Washington State's high desert runs around 95-110 day time temps. I've got a custom pair of 1880's style step in shotgun chaps and they get unbearably hot in the summer. I need something a lot lighter. So after a couple hours of riding I don't feel like I just stepped out of the water trough and soaking wet.

My full-length shotguns were made by Jack Stewart of Showlow, AZ. He does great work... when he gets around to it. It took several months for him to get mine done. He makes "working wear", not show stuff. I don't have his number handy, but I'm sure he's listed in the phone book.

I've seen several other makers of good quality stuff advertised in Western Horseman... I think I'd stick with a name brand and do some searching of their websites. There's a place up in MT that stopped in at and looked around at their showroom and workshop. Wish I could remember their name, but they were in Three Forks, MT.

Even though it's hot down here, I don't use 'em... the mesquite thickets are deadly on unprotected shins, etc. Bad enough on shirts and arms!

Hey Griff, How ya doing?

We don't have much around here that's big and thorny. Mostly sagebrush, buckbrush and the like. Those shotguns are just too blamin hot.

Doin' good if they'd actually keep me working and out of the heat of South Texas. Fuel mileage in the "new" truck is a good 2mpg better than the old one! Down in LaPorte loading up headed to OKC for tomorrow.

And yea, sagebrush just has a nice smell, it don't got no 3" pokers!

Kim, Try gundersen sunrise products there in IDhttp://www.gundersensunriseproducts.com ... 0Info.html I just bought a set of batwings 135.00 plus shipping didnt price chinks, note on chinks I hate that floppy 6"fringe when Iam hunting, critters can spot that movement a mile away and they dont come down far enough to protect your shins and boots from rain & snow.All their products buckle in the front so that you dont tear up your cantle with a buckle.danny
