OT - Opening day of Archery Deer - pictures

Post by rjohns94 »

The big game season opened here to a cool 46 degree, cloudy and breezy day. Fall was in the air for sure, as well as the dew was on the ground. The alarm went off at 4 am, first shooting time was 0636. I was a bit conflicted as I let the dogs out, topped off their bowls, and pondered the possibilities of the day. Earlier in the week I had taken possession of a beautiful transition 1893 in 30-30 and I was looking forward to shooting the Marlin, but.... it was opening day of archery!. I had put my tree stand in the trock last night, along with my back pack and my longbow was strung with three broadheads in the quiver, along with two blunts. Camies were set out along with my moccasins. I was excited to go this am but I REALLY wanted to shoot the '93. Better judgement gave way to the right answer: there are more archery day left in the season but there is only one first range day for this beauty. I climbed back into bed for another couple of hours. When I got up, went and walked the mule, came back and cut the grass twice and trimmed and edged. Finally the range opened and I was there with my new prize. Unfortunately that didn't go so well as aparantly , the front firing pin was removed and I didn't get a single shot off. OH Well, Still hunting to do so off I went to the game lands.

I have hunted these game lands for some 10 years, and taken some nice animals off them. I have done my scouting and I knew for the eveing hunt, I wanted to be on the hill that is used for transition from bedding to feeding grounds. My summit climber went up the tree with ease and I was set for the last 3.5 hours of light. At 5:10 two does crossed higher up the hill from me, about 30 yards away. I let the first one pass and waited till the second put her head behind a tree and I stood, put an arrow on the leather shelf of the Wes Wallace custom take down bamboo longbow. The doe moved a bit further and was framed between two small saplings, her vitals offered to me. The draw was smooth and the follow through perfect for the thirty yard shot.

As the arrow traced the sacred arc, created by God's physics and the dynamics of the materials crafted by a master, the thought in my mind was "she is closer than that". The arrow's flight was quiet and the doe didn't hear the whisper of the bampoo that propelled the sure death towards her, standing perfectly still framed for my view. The arrow hit with a solid thud after passing OVER the backstraps of that beautiful doe. 23 yards up hill, when I am 25 feet up a tree, yields a miss on a perfect 30 yard shot. The math now firmly etched into the nerons of this anicient soul. The two does spooked a few yards , then continued along their way.

30 mins later, a lighter colored but much larger deer passed going in the opposite direction, about 60 yards away. This buck stayed up the hill from me, bedding down and then eventually moving on. It was this buck that kept me from taking a shot at the other 4 does that passed within the flight path of that first arrow. No deer backstrap for dinner tonight but....

There were Bison backstraps thawing at the house and I was so looking forward to having them for dinner. I marinated the straps, cut in strips, and added the usual spices. The grill was fired up, threw some sliced mushrooms in some EVO, added garlic salt, and then quick seared the back straps. Eight mins for the shrooms to get done, just 4 mins for the meat. Pure heaven I tell you!!!! Melted in my mouth, the shrooms topping each piece that went into my mouth. I had about 8 strips and about a dozen mushrooms, with a side of applesauce. Wow was it ever good.

Great story, I'm taking my 1893 to the range tomorrow for the first time. 1908 t/d 30-30.
It had about 100yrs of lead buildup and a couple other issues (one being a broken firing pin).

The dinner part of your story had my mouth watering and I just ate an hour ago.

Very good :D I read this before breakfast and now I'm staving
The bow, what a great primeval inspiring even spiritual way to take game, they make a gun almost offensive, brutal, noisy, impersonal and mechanical by comparison.
Blessings.

While I am no food expert, I have been eating all my life and that looks delicious....

Sounds like you have your tree stand in a productive spot.

Bowhunting can be tough. The success rates as a rule are much lower than those animals taken with a gun.

Nathan, I agree to an extent when I am with my bow. You are closer to nature sitting in your treestand with your Bowtech Guardian set at 80% let off using ST Axis carbon arrows, 100 grain Slick Trick broadheads .

Ah bigbore I should of mentioned trad/primitive archery over thems wheelie bitser bows
No seriously, any bow driving an arrow into a critter is blood curdling. It's one up from using a spear and I can imagine how that must get the pulse going!

Mike,
You should have been a writer. Good story :D Funny thing though---I am presently in Colorado and swore I could have smelled mushrooms and bison grilling. I thought to myself, ""That Mike must have waited 'till I came out West before he fired up his grill so he would not have o invite me over. :D

I'll be honest, I think traditional archery looks fun but I will stick with modern tackle. I see archery season as a way to increase my chances of filling up the freezer. The deer have a lot of advantages and I need all I can get. So I will stick with my Bowtech that is very forgiving to shoot.
