What spare parts to stock for Rossi Puma?

Post by AJMD429 »

Given the ever-changing political climate, I'd like 20 years from now to still be able to deer hunt with my Puma .454, or to pass it down to my children, but if one of the parts breaks, and laws too tough to get parts, or Legacy no longer around, what parts are likeliest to break and need replaced? I had to disassemble my Puma today (mounted the Williams FP sight, and once I think of a good story to explain the big scratch on my receiver, I may post pics), and there are LOTS of little parts in there! Seems like way more than my Marlins, and it got me thinking - what if one breaks..! :o

Even if the part was something a gunsmith would have to fit, at least having it would be helpful. Does Legacy/Puma/Rossi whoever even sell any spare parts? Which ones would make a reasonable 'repair kit' to have?

(Actually, this is a question which might be good to know about Marlins, Winchesters, and all others, as well!)

AJMD, I'm no expert on the subject, but I do have a highly modified 454 Puma. Things that you can expect to break are the stock or forearm, so I would have those bedded. The plastic mag tube follower is another culprit that will fail within 20 years. Mike at M&M gunsmithing used to make billet aluminum followers for some of us in the 454 Casull group, but I don't know if he has any left. All Rossi's seem to have excessive headspace although they may pass a go/no go guage. If and when that becomes a problem, that can be fixed by setting the barrel back and adjusting all the other parts such as forearm, mag tube and some other parts. As to the small internal parts, it might help to have them slicked-up by a competant gunsmith like Steve Young so perhaps they won't wear as much. Steve is the best one to direct your question too anyhow.

In general my extra rifle parts have included:

An extra set or two of;
screws
springs
firing pin
firing pin retaining pins
ejector
ejector spring if used
extractor

And do get rid of the plastic magazine follower. All of them are junk in my not so humble opinion.
It's the first part I changed out on my Marlin 1894.
I also agree with what Tutt said.
