New "Dog" in the house !

Post by 6pt-sika »

Early this week I recieved a test mould from Ranch Dog for a 323-170GC bullet !

So the same day I cast about 250 of them for test work and possible hunting later this season !

Image

I had three Marlin's to test the bullet in and new where I could borrow a Winchester (sorry to say I didn't take a pic of the Winchester) .

First test rifle was my Marlin model 1893 in 32-40 of 1906 vintage !

Image

And here's what I did on paper with it so far ! I've only tried XMP5744 as of yet !

Image

Here are my 32 Specials !

First is my Marlin model 1936 .

Image

And my Marlin model 336SC of 1950 vintage !

Image

And here's what I got !

Both seemed to be alright with 22 grains and the 336SC was okay for hunting with 21 grains . However the 1936 didn't care for 21 grains at all !

Now here's what the Winchester 94 in 32 Special did with the same ammo I was using in the Marlin's !

Image

It seemed to have a preference for 21 grains of XMP5744 .

All this was done on wednesday . Thursday I pretty much spent my time at the range shooting the three Marlin's at the 100 and 200 meter silhouettes .

And I gotta say that worked pretty well also !

sweet!! you are the lucky dog.I've got questions.
what yardage did you shoot those at?
what alloy are you using?
what size are the bullets dropping out at?
how many cavitys in mold?
I assume they chambered good in the Winchester.whats your COL?
When can i get my grubby little mitts on one of these molds?
Could you post pics of a sized and lubed bullet along w/ a completed cartridge?I can't wait to try these cast bullets.thanks for posting this.

With iron sights initial targets are shot at 50 yards . And that was done wednesday ! Thursday I shoot them at silhouettes at 100 and 200 meters with very good results .

I didn't measure the size when dropped . However some others involved in this have said they dropped at around .325" .

As to the mould the initial test moulds are 2 cavity however that could change when he puts these in production ! I would assume he starts with 2 cavity moulds and then later brings out a 6 cavity .

As to when this thing goes in production I would say 8 months at a minimum . As he has not made the final specs on the production mould as of yet ! However based on past moulds I would be willing to bet the final decision will be made in the next 10-14 days . And he will have his order in which should take about 8 months for Lee to finish after that point !

When I loaded these rounds I loaded them deeper and therefore did not crimp in the groove .

The bullets went in my rifles well ! But the Winchester that I used was a rifle that had been "worked on" before and I did not feel it was as slick as my rifles . However the guy that owns the rifle said he thought it worked great .

Ah - thought it was a gc bullet. Have you tried Lee Liq Alox? That's my all time fav for cast rifle bullets - good to 2000 fps at least (that's the fastest I've pushed em).

i am dancing a jig and it is good yall can't see it. it aint pretty. i have been waiting for a 32 spec mold to come out. i think ranch dog's molds are very fine. i don't own one, but i have been investigating his concepts. from what i can determine he has it right.

now i have to keep saving my pennies.

I think he'll eventually offer the mould in a 2 cavity and later more then likely a 6 cavity should intrest warrent it !

And if I'm not mistaken cost of a two cavity with shipping is about $29-32 .
