45-70 and Paper-patch bullets

Post by edwardyoung »

I just got this Marlin 1895SS

and also just finished reading Paul Matthews' book, "Forty Years With the .45-70."

He states that "the paper patched bullet is the ultimate in hunting bullets." At over $1/round for factory-loaded ammo, I'll have to reload if I shoot mine much at all. I was wondering if there are other paper-patch bullet fans here, and if there are particular on-line resources or books that offer more light than heat on the subject where I could read up. Thanks.

Go to the Shiloh Sharps forum. You'll get all the information on PP bullets you can digest.

I think you pretty much hit the acknowledge expert in the field by reading Paul Matthew's book. I have several of his books on the .45-70. I think I'd need to reread them all were I to get into paper-patching, but I'd start with his book "The Paper Jacket" and "Practical Paper Patched Bullet".

Good luck and keep us "posted"! :D (I couldn't resist!!!)

After a lot of frustration and effort, I bet you'll end up back with lubed cast bullets, and better accuracy. I tried paper patched bullets, and really gave them a concerted effort, but no matter what I did with various paper, powders, and loads, I never got accuracy that could match a good lubed bullet.
It's fun to patch your own bullets, but in the end I found it time consuming, and not worth the trouble.

Thanks, MM93. You may not have had a microgroove Marlin, but if you have, did you have a favorite cast bullet for it? Thanks.

I'll keep you posted, Kid

I have been patching since the early 70s and the 45-70 is one of the easiest of all to patch for. If I can help in any way e-mail me pdawg.shooter@gmail.com.

Yes, I've had some Micro-Groove barreled Marlins, but never tried paper patched bullets in a MG barrel. I'd suspect that it would be even less forgiving than a Ballard rifled barrel that can grip and cut the patch as it travels down the bore.

I was asking if you had a favorite cast, lubed bullet. Not a paper patch bullet. Sorry I wasn't clear. Thanks.

Thanks for the offer pdawg.shooter. If I ever come up with an intelligent question, I'll get up with you.
