No Bullseye
I picked up the Marlin 1894 (.44 Mag.) today that I ordered from Bud's. This is new stock to Bud's, so I assume it was just manufactured after the Remington buyout of Marlin. I gave it a quick visual going over at my FFL before the paper work was completed and saw no obvious flaws.
After getting it home and comparing it to my pre-Remington 1894C I noticed that the new one does not have the bullseye insert in the stock. I know there was a post a while back quoting some manager type at Marlin claiming the rumors of Remington eliminating the bullseye as a cost cutting measure were not true. Well, obviously they were true.
Another disappointment concerns the bolt. When in battery, the back of the bolt face does not fit flush with the receiver. It also shows some signs of some grinding to make it fit. The top left side edge of the bolt has a bevel where it was ground.
I haven't shot it yet, but plan a trip to the range next week.
Not a good start for Remington, in my opinion.

Re: No Bullseye
I have seen two or three like that - a little gap in the bolt/receiver closure. I doubt it affects headspace (but if I had one I'd sure check it), but it does look sloppy. I think I'd send it back, just to get their quality control in shape (i.e. for their own good) even though I don't think it likely makes the gun not go bang.

Too bad about the Bullseye. Another icon bites the dust.
As for the bolt protruding from the rear of the receiver, I believe my 1894 Cowboy does a little bit. I do also know that the lower right corner of that bolt is razor sharp. It's made me bleed once or twice.

Every one I have seen stick out a little. It dont bother me. I read that the bulseye was droped for a short time and brought back due to customer complaints. yours must be one of those transition guns. If that is true,it could be worth a premium someday.

IIRC Marlin decided to drop it prior to the sale to Cerebus and then Remington came in and asked "Are you nuts?".Chuck 100 yd wrote:Every one I have seen stick out a little. It dont bother me. Re: No Bullseye
You could always buy a Bullseye from Marlin, drill a hole and glue it in. Sure would look better.

Re: No Bullseye
Is this a Walnut stock, or a Birch/Beech "Hardwood" one? Only the Walnut stocks have the bullseye. It sure isn't unbelievable that you have a Walnut stock that was missed, or they really did consider dropping the feature for a short time, although the company says that is an un-founded rumor.

The furniture is about the same as my 1894C, but not as much grain. Looks like walnut to me and according to Marlin, all 1894's are walnut:Cast Bullet Hunter wrote:Is this a Walnut stock, or a Birch/Beech "Hardwood" one? Only the Walnut stocks have the bullseye. This rifle will be used for hunting, not a safe queen, so if this is a good shooter I won't mess with the bolt. What the misfitted and buggered bolt tells me though is that rather than tossing it in the scrap bin and finding a proper fitting bolt, Marlin tried to save a buck by making this one fit with a grinder.
I also need to slug the bore to make sure it is OK.
On the plus side, the action on this one is smoother out of the box than my 1894C was.
