my new Marlins: dates of manufacture

Post by new pig hunter »

here's the purchase background of my new 375 and 444 Marlin's .....
http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... 4&p=125257

I used this website to get the date of manufacture:
http://armscollectors.com/sn/marlinlookup.php

the 375 serial number begins with 20, and the website says it was manufactured in 1980. I reckon that is the first year Marlin made the 375.

the 444 serial number begins with 11, and the website says it was manufactured in 1989.

Cheers,

Carl

Old Savage,

Wow, my other Marlin 375 looks "just like yours" !! Almost of course, except your scope is has a slightly different shape than the one on mine.

My other Marlin 375 is a "17" ... which means it was made in 1983.

Cheers,

Carl

The .444 is very smooth .... I'll be removing the bolt and polishing with 2000-grit wet/dry sandpaper.

The .375 is not too smooth, there is some oily gunk on the bolt, it will also get the sandpaper treatment after cleaning.

All Marlin Qwners:

Marlin year of manufacture maybe determined from the following list of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number; this coding only applies to serialized rifles:

1946= C
1947= D
1948= E
1949= F
1950= G
1951= H
1952= J
1953= K
1954= L
1955= M
1956= N
1957-58= R
1958-59= S
1960 (August)-1961= U
1961 (August)-1962= V
1963= W
1964= Y & Z
1965= AA
1966= AB
1967= AC
1968= AD & 68
1969= 69
1970= 70
1971= 71
1972= 72 - IIRC, an exception is the early 2nd generation M-1895 .45-70's (ca.1972), which have a "B" prefix (again IIRC).

Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100:
Ex: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].

What about post-2000 ones...

If it begins "93xxxxxx" then is that 2007...?
