It's only plastic that I'll be paying forever.

Heck, if it were me I'd go for it. Sounds a lot like my 83 trapper 30-30. A plain fore end but some of the prettiest "fiddleback" walnut on the buttstock! Also nice original Mausers are getting a lot harder to find these days. I also have a soft spot for them but mine are ww2 98k's. The flagship is a 1940 code 243 (Berlin Mauserwerke) with all matching components and in excellent original shape. It has no importer marks as it was a battlefield pick up. I bought it from the GI's son after the gentleman had passed on. He told me that it came from the beach at Normandy. This is one that will not become "sporterized" in my lifetime.

I often talk myself out of great deals and then kick myself repeatedly afterwards for the ones I let "slip away". That being said, I would never go into debt to buy a gun. I have had to borrow from myself (my savings - with a schedule to pay myself back), but unless you can pay off the plastic immediately and it is just for convenience, don't put yourself into hock.

Guns are cheap.

You might do what I did one year, I went through the house and found about 15 things to sell on Ebay. I left the money in the Paypal account and let it sit there for a year. Then I bought frivolous things but paid with Paypal instead of using real dough.

Of course, you need to jump on this now, but, that's planning, isn't it? You can buy the Trapper and pay yourself back through Ebay.

Now is not the time to run up credit card (or other) debt you can't immediately pay off. The trapper is a better investment if you must succumb. Of course I might not be the best person to give advice on this subject of buying guns but I am trading for, or paying cash for the guns I'm getting. I'm also setting back some money for the glut of guns that might hit the market if the economy really does go south.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Good plan - I need to start doing the same. This is one of those "perfect storm" scenarios in the market - and the storms are related. Housing market issues aren't going to go away; best case scenario is we bottom out end of this year or sometime in 2009, then start turning around slowly. Most in that industry expect 2009 housing starts to be flat to slightly down compared to 2008 - and that was before the stock market/banking issues the last week and a half. Looking at housing starts to begin picking up speed in 2010 but not hit full swing until 2012. The market is now starved of capital. Should Obama get elected (God Forbid!) and raise taxes on capital gains and businesses as he has said he would, it will further starve out the market. The recession no one wants to admit has started (because it is different than the old textbook definitions) will turn into a full-blown depression at that point.

Heck, now I'm depressed myself... :(
