.444 Marlin and 300 Grn Speer uni-cor.

Post by 2ndovc »

Got to the range today w/ my 94 Black shadow and some hand loads.

After reading Paco's article on the 444 and the Black Shadow and how it preferred the heavier bullets I ordered some
300 Gr. Speer Uni-cor soft points. Though after reading about the 444 in my Speer manual
is says that the 300 gr. bullet may not expand reliably in deer size game.
Anybody use the 300 Speer in 444?
I'm getting some pretty good results w/ this bullet and 36 Gr IMR 4198.
@1 1/2" at 50 yds.
Paco's article also mentioned shooting 44-40's through the .444 so I just had
to try that too. Fired single shot they worked pretty good. Didn't
try any on paper but was hitting what I was aiming at with a 6" hold over @ 100 yds.
Cases were nice and straight upon ejection but a quick pass through the sizing die
and they were back to normal :D

So far the Hornady 265 LevEv. has been the most accurate @ 1" ay 50 yds.

Also took my Martini Greener .22lr along for some plinkin'
Hard not to shoot 1/2" groups w/ that 30" barrel.

Thanks Mike :D

I'm really taken with this 94. Nice and light and packs a heck of a punch.

I have taken a couple nice bucks and one elk with the 300gr Speer in the .444. I get about 1900fps with it out of my T/C and never recovered any of the bullets. There was a bit of indication on all of them as to some expansion, especially the elk!

Just what I was looking for.

The book says that the 270 may be a better performer and I'm going to try those but I hate messing
with too many different loads this close to deer season.

Thanks!
