270SAA bullet in .45 LSI PUma

Post by jd45 »

Hello to all! I have some of these Keith-type SWCs in .452 & .454 from MontanaBullet Works, & am wondering if anyone else has tried them in their Puma with the real slow twist rifling, (1-in-30something) & if so, what results did you obtain? I'm considering it for deer this year up to, but certainly not beyond, 100yds. I would appreciate your feedback. Thanx, jd45

JD45,

I have used that bullet and several variations in all of my lever action .45 Colts. I'm not sure what rifling twist my Rossi had, but it shot very well with the heavier Keith bullets.
My Win 94AE Trapper does have the 1-38 twist and will shoot into 2" at 100 yds with my Lyman 454424 268gr KSWC, sized to .454" and pushed out the barrel by 9.0grs Unique.
I'm not sure what my Marlin will do at 100 yds yet, but it does great at 25. Not that it's hard to shoot good groups at 25 yds with a rifle.

The only criteria is; will it feed this bullet loaded to and crimped into the crimp grove? My Rossi would not until it was tuned for it.

Thanx Joe.........by "tuned for it" I assume you mean that "backstop" at the rear of the cartridge lifter was ground away enough to allow longer OAL carts to feed thru from the mag, which is what I've done. I got Steve Young's video & am in the middle of doing some mods to the action that're described in it, tho grinding away that backstop isn't part of them. I got that trick from 45Stomp, that Canadian guy from this forum who uses the Miroku/Winchester '92 & the 325gr SWCs. What a Godsend that DVD is! I have to say, I'm planning to run those bullets quite a bit faster than you have,.......well maybe not THAT much faster.........that's a pretty good chunka lead to toss at anything! Thanx again, jd45

JD,

My Rossi was tuned by Mike at M&M Gunsmithing in VA. I honestly do not know what he did to it, but after he got done it would feed anything not longer than the 270 gr Keith SWC.

I haven't had my lever guns to the long range in a very long time. When I did 9.0grs Unique with my 268gr KSWC was the hottest thing I'd loaded. Now I have some loaded with 18.5grs 2400 and some heavier bullets ( the ones you gave me) with a bit heavier loads. I would really like to see what they will do. Maybe before the weather turns I can get out and see.
I really do not see the need to push heavier bullets (300gr +) much over 1200 fps out of a 7.5" revolver. What ever that comes out to will dispatch anything on this continent. Even the 9.0grs load will if the shooter/hunter does his part.
