This weekend's shop project - pics
Well, although I'm back on the road again today (Sunday) I did get a chance to squeeze in another shop project yesterday. This time it was fixing the butt on my 94 Swede sporter (again, this was found chopped and rescued). I've done a lot of work on this rifle but there was one more thing that was bugging me - the length of pull was a full inch longer than my stock rifle's and indeed it felt too long when I shouldered the rifle (I'm 5'8"). It also had a ventelated white line pad that just didn't look quite right on the stock. So, I removed the old pad, shortening the LOP by 1" and fabricated a steel plate to take it's place. Now, it looks and feels right to me - here's the before and after:

Nice work. I have always found the personal touches I have put in my rifle has given me a familiarity that extends to the shooting bench and hunting fields.

O.S.O.K., just go ahead and move on up here to the DFW area so I can commandeer access to your shop...
How did you make the buttplate?

Finally got the 1893 t/d 30-30 bore scrubbed enough to shoot if I hafta.
Will clean and put together the action and look at the t/d latch and see
what else it needs. Hoping to resurect this 100yo for season start in 3
weeks. If unsuccesful I will pick up a 1920 t/d Savage 99 in 30-30 on
friday and take one or both to the range next weekend.

O.S.O.K., nice job. Even without the asthetics, havin' a rifle that doesn't fit can play hob with yer shootin'!

How did you make the buttplate?
To make the buttplate, I went to tractor supply and bought some 2" wide, 1/8" cold rolled steel stock, cut a piece off and marked and drilled the two screw holes on the drill press (this required countersinking with a larger drill so the screws would fit flush). I then mounted the plate to the prepared buttstock and scribed a line all the way around. Then, I put the piece in the vice and used an edge grinder to remove the majority of the excess - then moved over to the bench grinder and carefully removed the rest - mounting it to the stock to check progress towards the end. Once it was cut to size, I used a mill file to remove all of the burrs and smooth the edges. Then I used an orbital sander with fine grit paper to sand it down smooth. Then, I heated the piece with a propane torch and applied some oxpho blue to darken it up.
I've added equipment to my shop kinda as I needed it for projects. Also have received many pieces for Christmas gifts
I need to get a lathe - especially one that can handle barrels.... and maybe a tig welder...
Probably need to get some gunsmithing cd's too

Wow - excellent work! I spent Saturday in the shop, but it was building games for a Cub Scout camp-out next month.
