Prosecutors: No charges in convention gun incident.

Post by Tycer »

DENVER (AP) — Prosecutors say they won't bring charges against a man accused of carrying guns in a case into a Denver hotel during the Democratic National Convention last month.
Joseph Calanchini was arrested Aug. 23 on suspicion of unlawfully carrying a weapon. Police say he had four guns in a case when he tried to check in to a hotel where House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was staying. Pelosi was evacuated from the building.
Denver District Attorney's office spokeswoman Robin Finegan said Monday that police never presented the evidence to prosecutors.
Calanchini had said he didn't know about the convention or that Pelosi was at the hotel. He says he's relieved the case is closed but hasn't gotten his guns back.

DENVER (AP) - Prosecutors say no charges will be filed against a man who was arrested after causing a weapons scare during the Democratic convention.

Joseph Calanchini of Pinedale, Wyo., was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully carrying a weapon on Aug. 23. Police say he had two hunting rifles and two pistols in a case when he tried checking in to the Denver hotel where House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was staying.

Pelosi was evacuated.

Denver DA's spokeswoman Robin Finegan said Monday police never presented the case to prosecutors. Police did not immediately have additional information.

Calanchini has said he didn't know about the convention or that Pelosi was at the hotel.

He said he's relieved the case is closed but police haven't returned his guns or the personal belongings they confiscated from his pickup.

"It has not been a good experience," Calanchini told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "I know it was poor timing on my part, but I think it was just an overreaction" by police.

Calanchini, a salesman in the oil field industry, said he's lost some work because of the case. He said he brought the guns to Denver to have them worked on in preparation for a safari to South Africa.

His arrest didn't ruin his plans. He said he was able to get permission from authorities to make the trip, where he rented a rifle and managed to kill a warthog, an impala, a kudu and a wildebeest.

Typical over-reaction by the left. He needs to sue them silly if they don't return his guns pronto.

Correction, amigo mio - He needs to sue them silly - this happened in THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, not some sorry excuse of a socialist nation such as "The United Kingdom" where citizens are routinely stripped of their rights and have no legal standing. He should take them for all he can get. False arrest. Unlawful detention. Misuse of authority. Excessive force. Anything he can find should be thrown at them - it's time we quit putting up with this type of abuse. This would be an appropriate case for the NRA legal team to get behind and make an example of.

What irritates me no end is that when a person is involved in any law enforcement action, it's always a criminal situation. You loose you're screwed.

However the only recourse against this kind of law enforcement excess is in civil court. Which has basically no effect on the officers, or agency at all. They simply try to settle out of court or have their insurance pay off the plaintiff. You win, you're still screwed, because the offending officers and agency get off scott free.

IN MY OPINION THERE IS NO JUSTICE IN THE U.S.A. ANYMORE.
