OT - It was a hot one today...

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Today was the first day of the annual fundraising drive for the Cub Scouts in our area. They sell popcorn to raise money for the packs. My son and I picked up a bunch from the church parking lot that our pack operates out of, and proceeded to get "down to selling". It was around 10:00am. We marched throughout our neighborhood, and probably didn't get 5 houses before we were both soaked through from sweating. It was really hot - and really, really, REALLY humid. Around 1:00pm we finished our neighborhood, stopped to grab lunch and a few more drinks, then proceeded to the neighborhood down the road. We trekked through that one until almost 5:00pm. Exhausted, soaked and thirsty we came home.

The secret to success is your effort the first day. Many scouts don't go out - between having sports and the weather, but by the end of the first weekend all the neighborhoods have been well covered, so your chance of success drops dramatically. A lot of parents take the popcorn in to their work to sell it there. I work out of my house, and my wife is a stay-at-home Mom, so we don't have that option.

I'm proud of him. He kept it up all day without complaint, stayed enthusiastic, and did a great job. An old mentor of mine once told me that the man who knows how to sell will never go hungry. He was right. He beat his total from all 4 weeks of selling last year in the first day this year - and last year he sold more than any other scout in our Pack.

Yep - I'm doing a little bragging on Ysabel Kid's Kid!!! :D

All in all it sounds like the two of you had a good father and son day. Which is always a good thing!

I can just see it now "YKK's Used Car Lot and pop corn sales" :D :) :D

Scouts just hosted the local airshow with the Blue Angels. Saturday they canceled on account of rain. Today it went off well with cloudy skies and 60 degrees. We don't get popcorn stuff till next week.

Back in the middle 40's (yes I'am old) right after WW2 the cub scout den I belonged to had a paper drive. We had an old Dodge pannel truck that dad used for work. My mom drove me around several areas, as they used to bundel their papers and put them on the curb on Fridays for pick up. We wound up with the pannel truck full. Mom called the Den Mother and asked where she wanted them. She said just put them in the driveway in front of the garage door. She was going out for a while and would take care of them when she got home. Next day my mom got a call about all the papers we had stacked in front of the garage door. Our troop did win the paper drive.

Great Job Grandpa, after all the best time is spent with kids. (It gets to be a pain when the mind will write a check your body can't cash)

"Grandpa"?

Well, I'm beginning to look that way. Have to make a mental note for sure - I no longer have enough hair, or rather, what I have is not thick enough, to properly shade my skull when out in the blazing sun all day. I'm getting sunburnt in spots that never got sunburnt before!

Well Jay you could do as I do... shave it. I've only been to the barber about three times in the last 30 years. after a while your head gets used to it.

Congratulations on the popcorn to you and your son. Not only has your son sold a lot of popcorn, he has also learned the value of being able to say I did it myself, my dad didn't do it for me.

Thanks Rusty! I've been telling my wife it is only a matter of time before I do just that and shave it all off. Trying to prep her for the inevitable!

My son is the smart one. He did the selling and I did the running back and forth to the car to get the popcorn. We were selling about a dozen different types, and would park the car between four house - hit them all - then move to the next four. He knocked on 135 doors the first day!
