Need some advice on factory ammo.........

Post by Mokwaw »

...an elderly friend of mine was saying his M1100 Rem in 12 ga is just too much gun ( too much recoil, too heavy, too long) for him to handle anymore for deer hunting. On my advice he traded it in on a Marlin 1894 .357 mag. He does not hand load, so my question to you with experience is, what factory ammo (bullet weight etc.) would you recommend for deer hunting...??????? ...these would be northern Indiana whitetail deer. Thanks.

I think the Buffalo Bore Item 19C or 19A will do for deer. The Federal Cast Core has a good reputation with some. I think the Remington 180 gr. SJHP will likely perform well, too. I load the same bullet over 15 gr. L'ilGun for 1700 fps in my 1894C.
Sincerely,

I've not shot a deer with them, but my Marlin 1894 really liked (5 shots = 2-3" @ 100 yards with a scope) the Federal 180 grain Premium Vital-Shok ("cast-core") factory loads.

They are long & flat-point, so be sure they feed decently, but they were fine in my gun. They weren't cheap, but a box of 20 should get a person sighted in and comfortable, and the second box should start getting venison dinner.

In fact, this year my daughter has been sighting in and practicing with cheap 158 grain ammunition but once she's ready we'll switch to the 180 grainers and make appropriate sight adjustments.

Just going to add my agreement on heavy (180 grain) and either hard cast solid or good quality hollowpoint like Hornady's XTP.

The deer there are good sized and you want maximum penetration.
