I decided to name the Dory I inherited from my Dad the "Nelson J. Fay" in honor of him. I took her out into Kailua Bay yesterday on her first real fishing voyage. Long story short I caught a very decent size Barracuda about 50 pounds which I released after the photo was taken. I had a young fishing partner Evan in his own kayak who took the picture, thanks Evan.
nice fish i don't know about 50 lbs thought may be 48 lbs i can see

Papabear, you got me thinking that maybe my estimate may have been skewed because I was struggling to lift that fish onboard after rowing over 11 miles with cramping arms and soar back. Then I remembered a buddy of mine Dave Eglas had the week before caught a verified by certified scale 65 pound Barracuda so I compared the 2 pictures and I see how huge his 65 pounder was compared to mine and i'm guessing now that my 'Cuda was probably closer to 40 pounds not 50 as I first guesstimated. Here a picture of both fish, what do you guys think?

Aloha Mike, I Google Earthed my route and figured I rowed roughly 18 miles that day total including 2 mile round trip from my home to beach. I was trolling a 10 'Awa'awa which is Hawaii's version of a "Ladyfish" that I had caught and salt cured last month and had in the freezer. I use a short stainless steel piano wire leader between the 8/0 forward Siwash hook and the rear 5/0 treble hook stinger with rest of leader being 7' of 125 pound monofilament. I also used a Luhr Jensen "Jet Driver" to get the bait to run deep. My leisurely trolling speed with oars is 3 knots guesstimate.
You'd be doing me a huge favor to take pictures every time you go out, and post them here as large as possible!
A banks dory is a sweet thing that few people know of or understand. Your dad obviously knew, and understood!
I'm sure he watches over you on every trip, just as my son watches over me every time I ride.
I always feel a tad guilty when posting off topic stuff. Seems that living in Honolulu County has reduced my opportunity and desire to go shooting.
Always nice to find someone who appreciates a nice Dory. My Dad being a New England Yankee before the war the love of Dories is almost genetic with one Dory or another in the household since 1939 at least. Thank you for the kind comments.
I said it before & I'll say it again, you got some gall; going out in that ocean in them little boats.
A guy from N.M. can not even imagine going in the ocean in something that small.
Ganjiro,
Congratulations on a fine day afloat! I'm jealous! A day aboard a fine watercraft, a fine catch, and that beautiful scenery.......I'm wishing I were there with you! As a kayak fisherman, I have a deep appreciation for "fish-powered" boat rides, I can imagine that 'cuda took you for a good one! Rock on, Ji!
Ji, I really don't think that you have anything to worry about with your post. We all know that you are a true lever gun man, and I know that all of your post and pictures are enjoyed here by my family and I am sure the rest feel the same way.

First, he's "Out on the Bay"
Second, if you're going out on big water in a small craft, you can't do much better than a dory .
I'd say you had 40 pounds of teeth there. Down here the folks that fish for Tarpon from a yak refer to it as a Florida Sleigh Ride. Conventional wisdom calls for a sea anchor to ad some drag to the boat.

I always keep a sea anchor handy on board but save that for the BIG fish. The kid that snapped the picture did say that I was being pulled backwards as he approached my Dory. I'm shooting for a Marlin ala "Old Man and the Sea".
A buddy of mine last week caught a 153 pound Black Marlin from his plastic Kayak on the island of Hawaii, wonder of I can top that?

PS. I forgot to add I got 4 miles out offshore during this 18 mile trip:
Last time I was out I saw a Tiger Shark as long as my boat but he was camera shy when I approached him.
There is nothing wrong with posting about an adventure of any sort. This certainly qualifies for most of us. The details always make the story as do the photos help those who've no experience with the equipment.

That is a cute little 'Cuda, I catch those in my backyard stream on ultralight tackle, a whole lot of fun.
Here's a couple I caught on my canoe in a large pond upstream from me.
