300 Win. Mag. in a Savage 99 ??

Post by cshold »

Is this a typeo or is this real?
If real must have been custom made.

The guy was smoking some good weed when he wrote that up. It HAS to be a 300 Savage. --------------------Sixgun

Some morons work in gun stores, sad but true.

Yep...

I have heard some real doosies listening to gun shop clerks/owners talk to other customers. I've also had them tell me some real BS and I point out the reality and they get all pissy.

Having an FFL means you can buy and sell firearms - that is all.

Most posting here on this board have forgotten more about firearms than a lot of gunshop owners and employees know about firearms.

I often have to speak up when I'm in the local. Sometimes I just shake my head and walk away. These are folks I know! Sometimes they will see me there and ask. If I know I tell them, if I don't I say so. For some reason they can't do the same, they feel they have to "know" something about it even if they don't really know anything.

Whoever listed this has an error ? I've had many errors wait on me in sporting goods stores here in calif. I heard a clerk in Bass Pro tell a prospective customer the port in the barrel behind the front sight on the SS Revolver would move the barrel downward when he fired a round causing him to miss the target ,I almost cracked up but just left the counter & said nothing but had a pretty good idea where he was previously employed.

One gun store owner asked me one day if you could ream a 300 Weatherby out to 300 Savage.

Hey, those are the kind of gunshops where the best deals are found. I picked up a '92 rifle in 32-20 at one of those shops. I was told by the shop owner it was a 32 special. Think I got it for about $300. They are the type of guys who never had a clue, and won't take the time to research anything...thereby allowing us to find some smokin good deals.

Kansas Ed brings up an interesting question:
It has happened to me, if a store owner is blatently wrong about a gun, and purchasing is a good deal for you, bad for him, how do you proceed?

I sent the seller a question about the stated caliber. We'll see what he has to say.

You might think I'm wrong but a businessman who doesn't know his business and charges higher than average prices on some stuff deserves to be "taken" on some other stuff. To me, there's a difference between the widow-woman next door and the businessman know-it-all.

Now, this depends. The one real gunshop in my town is owned by a real nice guy. He and I are friends. If he put something for sale that had a really silly low price on it, I would question him about it. I know that he will be making some money as he's going to mark it up for sure. He's the kinda guy that even if I pointed out that "this is a really good deal", he wouldn't change the price. But then, I've given him good advice on things from time to time and even helped him sell some stuff on gunbroker (he's not a computer guy) and he in turn, did some transfers gratis for me...

Now, if I walked into a shop say in Austin, where I'm not a regular and they had something stupid low, I'm going to purchase it and walk out with a good concious - after checking it over to make sure nothing is wrong with it ;)

One time at a gunshow this guy had a very rare (one of about 9 hundred) Ruger Flattop with a 7 and 1/2" barrel for $300. After checking it out to make sure it was not rebarreled or played with I hurried up and gave him 3 c-notes. After the gun was in my name I asked him how come so cheap. He tells me, "Thats all its worth, there's thousands of those out there." I just shut my mouth and walked on---gloating------------Sixgun

Your post topic says "300 Win Mag", but I see no such claim in the seller's ad.

What I DO see is:

"Savage model 99 in 300 magMade 1946"

Which could have been a typo for:

"Savage Model 99 in 300 / mag made in 1946" ;)

For several decades, if a man said he hunted with a 300 everyone knew he meant a lever action Savage. But since the JFK Administration, booming magnums have gained a significant foothold in the West. Perceptions and language have changed.

This my .308 Savage and a big bodied muley taken after a long stalk in isolated and un-inhabited country. Thank God for wheelbarrows!! Its a great device: combination of the lever AND the wheel.
