OT Epoxy recommendations

Post by BenT »

I'm having a problem with the fit of the front magazine tube hanger on a octagon barrel 94. It doesn't fit very well and comes loose after firing a couple shots. So I think I'm going to try epoxying it. So what are some pros and cons of some of the epoxies out there. I thought I read in another post of an expoxy that would release with heat. But I just don't see needing to remove this ever after epoxying it in. Thanks

I have had the same problem with both of my Marlin 1894 Cowboys. So far I've tried one of the LocTite products, the one for pre-assembled things, it didn't hold for long. I'm not sure what to try next. I'm not sure I want to epoxy it, but it's a tempting thought.

Is the milled slot so worn out that you aren't able to peen it back? I have repeened several of my Winchesters that were sloppy loose, and didn't need any adhesive. It is possible to THOROUGHLY clean and SOFT solder the band in place. Just a spot in the middle, no need to completely fill the gap. It can still be removed if necessary later.

Gun Smith,
I don't mean to hijack BenT's thread, but at least it's on the same subject.
On my first Marlin Cowboy I did peen the dovetail to tighten the hanger up. That lasted a bit before it loosened up. I didn't keep that one long enough to really know how long it lasted.

On the current one I've just used the LocTite stuff. It didn't even last a hundred rounds. When I pick the rifle up, I can feel the magazine tube moving side to side with even the easiest pressure on it.

If it loosens up any more I think a soft solder job would be in order.

If there is enough fit left that I can peen the lips over to tighten it some, I'll do that, cut some light serrations in the bottom of the hanger, clean both parts well then put it together and flood it with red LocTite. The LocTite helps fill the voids to cut down on vibrating the hanger back loose.

Thanks Gentlemen, I've tried peening . Nate I think I'll try your idea with the loctite. Solder is also an option. I really don't want to go with JB weld. There is gun show this weekend. I'm going to try to pick up a different hanger and see how it fits.
