Although Buckskin Bill, the last of the Mountain Men, has been gone for nearly 30 years, Ed Stevenson is still around. I stumbled on this article about him and his rifles. Here is the link.

Enjoy.

I really love rifles and all but if I was a Bear Guide I'm pretty sure I would be using
a pump 12 ga with rifled barrel shooting the magnum 546gr slugs as it sounds like for
him 50 yards is a long shot.

I've read that before and enjoyed reading it again. This time I noticed something about it ... Sheep River Hunting Camps is in Wasilla Alaska. I wonder if Governor Palin has been on any hunts with Ed's outfit? You know ... besides being the current VP nominee on the GOP ticket she's also a former mayor and councilwoman of ... wait for it ... Wasilla, AK. They must be putting something in the water in Wasilla.

I found that post a while back when i was reading about every alaska hunting forum. I found the article on him being attacked by a grizzly on the river interesting. It almost killed him. Go to show no matter how good you are a grizzly can kill you anytime he wants to.

I have a great little book I got from "Backwoodsman Magazine" about Buckskin Bill. Here sure was a fascinating character.

Very interesting. There was an article in Rifle or Handloader about a guy named Phil Shoemaker I believe that was similar. I used to have it but some how it got away. I would like to find it again.

I strongly recommend a biographical sketch written by the late Harold L. Peterson, The Last of the Mountain Men. This biography of Sylvan Hart aka "Buckskin Bill," was written in the 1960s. Interesting book about an interesting man.

It just reinforces the thought of a big ol bullet in a 100 plus year old designed rifle can't be beat. And this torture test is by someone who truely lives it, not jusy writes articlers about it. Give that ol boy a big slice of apple pie, he has sure earned it.
