Marlin 1894 questions/parts.

Post by BoneDigger »

I'm new here. Howdy from Texas!

I recently purchased a used Marlin 1894 and I have a couple of questions. First off, according to the S/N it was made in the early 70s. It has a 20 inch barrel with a saddle ring and a commemorative badge on the stock (straight stock).

I just put some peep sights on this gun (Williams) and the sights will not adjust fully down with the saddle ring in place. I took it out but would now like to fill in the hole. Anyone know where I can get a screw to fit this? I called Marlin but nobody knew. Local gunsmith said he thought it was a 12-24 screw but wasn't sure.

I took the gun to the range today and the magazine would only take 5 rounds. Aren't these supposed to take 10 rounds? Ideas on what the problem may be?

Lastly, has anyone here installed the Limbsaver pad to their .44? If so, how do they fit?

I seem to remember a few small run "commemorative" Marlins from the early 70s but that's as far as I can go on that. You'll have to wait for someone with more literature than me.

The only thing that I can tell you is take the front cap off the magazine tube and you'll likely find a piece of dowel in there limiting the magazine capacity.
"People who object to weapons aren't abolishing violence, they're begging for rule by brute force, when the biggest, strongest animals among men were always automatically 'right.' Guns ended that, and social democracy is a hollow farce without an armed populace to make it work."

Welcome to the board. :)

Good to have another Texian.

If I were you, I'd put the ring back on and either grind the bottom of the sight slide a little to clear it or just gettcha one of the Skinner sights - these mount on the receiver top and are really nice. http://skinnersights.com/ $45

As far as the buttpad goes, I use the leather lace-up pads that Cabelas stocks - they work great and can be esily removed should you want to. No mods to the gun needed. Here is a pic of my Marlin 336/356 Winchester with one on it:

The rear sight shown on that rifle is an XS sight - very good too but more expensive and no better than the Skinners.

And as Buffboy indicated there's probably a dowel in the mag tube to limit it to 5 rounds - probably was in a state that had a max of 5 rounds for magazines for hunting. I am assuming that this has the full length magazine....

Hope that helps.
