1972 Winchester 94 WECSOG project results -pics

Post by O.S.O.K. »

Well, I just finished assembling the rifle and before going any further, I want to thank all of you that offered advice and encouragement :) Thanks!

Did the following:

-Disassembled and removed the old barrel (which was pitted)
-Installed new barrel - which entailed some fitting ( I used a file to take material off of the shoulder of the barrel where it mates with the face of the receiver)
-Blued the marks that I made doing above  I degreased, heated slightly with a torch and applied Brownell's Oxpho Blue - best cold blue on the market IMHO.
-Rechambered the rifle to 30-30 Ackley Improved - this was really quite easy. I decided to just use my Brownells do drill oil and carb cleaner - did about 8-12 rotations, removed the reamer , flushed the chamber, whiped the chamber out with a slotted jag/patches, flushed the reamer and brushed with do drill, poured some do drill oil into the bore and reinsterted the reamer - repeated until finished. I need't have worried about going too far as the shoulder on the reamer does not cut and acts as a guide - perfect!
-Stamped "A.I." behind the .30 W.C.F. stamping on the barrel - turned out fine. This is always a little scary but the octagonal barrel with it's flats made this much much easier than a round barrel.
-Re-installed the barrel and checked headspace (again) - heaspace is good.
-Recontoured the inletting on the back of the handguard (it was configured for an older type receiver) and fit this to the rifle, finishing with some spirit stain and boiled lineseed oil. This went well though I ended up with a little gap at the front - but not bad.
-Installed the magazine tube and innerds.
-Installed a front sight (didn't like the one that came with) - went with a Marbles 1/16" brass bead
-Installed the buttstock (which I finished to closely match the handguard)
-Installed the Marbles tang sight (rear screw only)
-Checked for feeding and function - worked great! Magazine holds 4 rounds so you only lose 1 round of capacity by going this route.

And that's what you see in the pictures below.

I've got a Marbles sight blank and tang sight screw set on order and will finish the sight install when that arrives.

As you can see, there is a slight gap in the handguard at the front, but not bad (I'm happy with it!). Everything else worked out great! I'm really pleased with the Numrich kit and reamer that I got from Midway. I wouldn't hesitate to do this again - it's been a fun project.

The receiver is worn and I'm considering going with color case hardening - the only traditional finish that works with these scintered steel receivers.

I may also get a walnut buttstock with cressent butt. I think that would just finish it off right.

I'm looking forward to getting the remaining parts and getting it to the range. I'll be loading some gas check cast bullets over mild but near full pressure loads to fireform the cases. Using brand new RP brass.

I'll post more when I get initial range results.

Again, thanks to all that helped with my amature gunsmith questions.

Very good. I have the same barrel I'm using for a project, tho' I'm not as far along. Other traditional receiver finishes you might consider are pewter or nickel. Both can be applied to the scintered steel of the '64-'82 mdl 94s.

Hmmm pewter. That might look really good.

Do you happen to know of a source for a straight, walnut, cressant buttstock for a post 64, 94?

I've got a question into brownells asking about one that they list - but its description is lacking detail. They have the buttplate though for sure...

Silver Hill. I don't have any experience with these folks, but... I'm thinking of using them for a couple of stocks that I need to replace if Precision Gun Works doesn't get their production back up when I'm ready.

Silver Hill is a little spendy but if it fits post 64 rifles then... the PGW description says "for pre 1938 rifles only" and goes on to say that they won't fit otherwise...

Thanks

Thanks. I've decided to go ahead and search for a cressent buttstock - it just needs that I think. Still not decided on the receiver finish - waiting to see how mescelero's chemical process works - that might be a good alternative. The pewter would look really nice though...

Griff - do you know of a good place to have the receiver plated? Idea of cost? Thanks.

ETA: I was just lookin at the picture above and it occured to me that I'd not measured the barrel - looks longer than 24" doesn't it? Well I just went out and checked and it's 26" :) That's good. This will give another 30-50 fps and also increases the sight radius to 32" for accuracy.

I'm looking forward to the range session. The first 100 rounds through it will be cast bullets with 28 grains of W748 under them (170 grain Laster Cast with gas checks crimped on and lubed with Lee Liquid Alox). That will provide some fun shooting and 100 fireformed cases...

OK, I found a straight grip, walnut cressant buttstock and steel buttplate - Brownells came through. They have the Precision Gun Works stocks in inventory and they can be made to fit a post-64 receiver with a little wood work (according to their tech guy) - increasing the width of the tang inlays and removing some of the wood inside for the coil spring. It's straight grained walnut too so it should match my hadguard. The buttplate needs fitting and screw holes drilled, finsihing as well - a nice project in an of itself.

BTW if you're interested in these the order numbers are (buttstock): 710-100-292, (buttplate) 710-000-004 and (buttplate screws) 080-552-000.

That'll save a lot of searching.

The total cost of the project with these is $680 (rifle, barrel kit, buttstock/plate, tang sight)- not counting the reamer...

Thanks. The barrel work and the rechambering were both new things to me. The guys here helped me along and gave good advice that kept me out of trouble. :)
