Sounds like something I never heard of, and I thought I knew S&Ws. Are you sure it,s not 4"? Sounds interesting. Is there a model # under the crane? I know they came out with some heratige models lately. Does it have the lock? Or is it older pre lock? Pictures and more info will help.

Go here: http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve , join, ask the question. Be prepared to furnish Serial number, photos, etc. You haven't given enough information for even a wild-assed guess yet. BTW, there never was a 3 1/2 .38-44, assuming it hasn't been cut.

Her dad was a retired Los Angles county deputy and bought it but never fired it.
Cast Hunter your probable right on it being a 4' bbl. Think I know how she measured it.

And be prepared to be inundated by PMs and EMs from zealous collectors offering/demanding to buy the 38/44 Heavy Duty . . .

I once traded one of those off, years ago - before they became "hot". :( (sigh)

Depends largely on if it is pre-war or postwar. Assuming it is exactly as you state and all correct, I'd guess $1200+ if postwar and $1500-1600+ or more if prewar.
