Cimarron 92 ejecting/stove piping live rounds

Post by Big Ditch Mike »

I recently purchased a Cimarron 92 20 inch short rifle in 45 LC and if functions very smoothly except for occasionally ejecting /stove piping live rounds out the top. I am not slamming the lever forward, just trying to get a quick repetitive motion for CAS shooting. Ejecting live rounds doesn't work very well against the clock, and I am not that fast to begin with. Any suggestions on what I should look for? I use a 200g projectile, would stepping that up to 250g be a sensible attempt toward s a solution, or is it just the mechanics that need a tweak?

Thank you for reading this.

The guy who KNOWS is Nate Kiowa Jones, aka Steve Young of Steves Gunz, but he's in the midst of heavy winds and rains in Port Arthur, TX due to Gustav. He should be along shortly, just bring this BTT now and then.
Sincerely,

BTT, this sure does need Steve's attention, pray that they are making it through this.

Steve, aka "Nate Kiowa Jones", is definitely the guy... but... I'll ask a couple of questions to possibly narrow down the likely cause. Now mind ya, I've only tuned 3 Rossi '92s whereas I understand Steve had done hundreds. Is your rifle a Rossi or Armi Sport? they're slightly different, but... maybe.

When stovepiping, is a second round fed outta the magazine, or is the stovepiped round the only one on the carrier (lifter)? I'm not sure that going to a heavier projectile would alleviate the problem in either case. IIRC, if only the one round is on the lifter it is sometimes a clearance or a timing issue with the ramps in the cartridge guides. It might also be the spring behind the detent ball for the lifter is a little too strong and "catching" on the lifter and when the dentent is overcome it SNAPs up too fast, throwing the nose of the bullet thru the cartridge guides.

That probably, no... more'n likely, exhausts my knowledge of the problem.

There's another site that can give you some more info on the model 92. However, if you're unsure of yer abilities to do any work, I'd suggest talkin' to Steve before you attempt to fix it yourself. Marauder's Rifle Tune-ups. See specifically "Model 92 Cartridge Guide Adjustment".

Griff,

My rifle is an Armi Sport short rifle sold by Cimarron.

The stove piped round is the only round standing on the carrier. Some times they might spill out instead of stove piping. This doesn't happen all the time.

I will check the Marauder's site, thanks for the info. I guess this is kind of a rare thing for a 92 ?

I don't think so... but having been in the CAS game as long as I have I seen a lot of stuff. When it's your new "baby" doing this kinda actin' up, it doesn't matter how many others have had the same problem... now it seems personal! I'm sure Nate will drop by in a couple of days.
Hang in there.
