original hawken rifles

I have seen a few of these in museums, but never saw an original J&S or S Hawken for sale. What do they bring nowadays???

HIGHLY doubtful you will ever see one for sale, simply because most if not all of the survivors are in museums.

If I'm not mistaken, Samuel and/or Jacob Hawken built in Maryland before they went to Missouri. No doubt there are rifles out there with the Hawken name in various forms which in turn are probably worth many thousands. But the heavy barreled Hawken Plains rifle that made them famous has to be about as scarce as hens teethand worth a small fortune. On americanlongrifles.org is a guy named Don Stith who is a real authority on the Hawkens and is a noted builder of them as well. He could probably tell you a bunch.

Well, I just went down to the safe and found 2 Hawkens still new in the crate from 1837. I guess I would let them go for 200K a piece.
Ok, I woke up. Such a firearm would be impossible to price. When guns get that rare, its "who has the most money, along with desire". I really cannot see more than a few original Hawkens still in their original configuration and those are most likely in museums. If one did surface and it went to a well advertised auction, I'm guessing between 75 and 150K, depending on originality and condition.-----------------Sixgun

I heard a story once of a guy finding a barrel off a hawkin that was being used as a pry bar on some old farm!

Bogus Bill, I heard that too. I believe he had a rifle built around that barrel. read it in a muzzleloader or muzzleblast magazine several years ago.
